At the meeting . of the Baptist
church of Enterprise Thursday
night, February 19 was set as the
date for the dedication, of the new
edifice. A strong program Is being
gotten out which will appear later.
Mrs.. Ed. Beltazore of Pendleton,
who hod been visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Ashley, went on. to Joseph to
visit friends. Mrs. Beltazora was
formerly ; Mlsa Musty and resided
in this valley some twenty years
ago.
W, . K. Brewster, the Wallowa
photographer, visited friends and
transacted business here Wednesday
night. He expects to leave lm a
day or two for Idaho and Montana,
to locate when he finds the right
place.
Mrs. S. N, Browning went to Los
tine Friday to dress Arch WlUett's
wounds. His condition is precar
ious, the attempted probing for the
other bullet being unsuccessful! Tues
day, the patient having a nervous
collapse. The bullet Is supposed
to be lodged at the base of the brain.

Fred Jacob of Lostlne to the La
Grande hospital, Friday. Jacob is
tha boy who was shot in. December.
He la to a very low condition, blood
poisoning having set in. 'The fami
ly Is In indigent circumstances, and
the -county court had the boy sent
to the hospital .

State Veterinarian Sayi; No Such
Order Issuedr May In

State Veterinarian W. H. Lytle who
was in the city, Friday, says no
quarantine has been made, on Wallowa
county stock, and none, will be If the
order for muzzling dogs Is strictly
obeyed.
Dr. Lytle says the Gaskill & True
horses' were not - quarantined at the
Portland yards on account of rabies
among coyotea in this county, or
he would have heard of it. In. fact
such quarantine order would have had
to come from his office. He to in
clined to think the, hold-up of thehore-
es was for a monetary reason.
Dr. Lytle says the 12 hunters sent
out to the North End' are deputized
by him and have orders and full pow
er to kill unmuzzled) dogs.'
He has asked the county' court to
increase the bounty on coyotes for
the next 60 days, and this will be1 de
termined as soon as a quorum of 'the
court gets together. The court; may
also appoint a county veterinarian.
Dr. Lytle has recommended! Dr. E.
R. Flack for the position.

Judge J. B. Olmsted returned
Wednesday from Portland where he
had been attending the state meet
ing of the county judges and com
missioners. L. Couch of Wallowa,
who was in. Portland on other bust
ness, also attended.
Mr. Olmsted says It was an Inter
esting session, and of profit to all
who attended because of the inter
change of views and experiences.
Th meeting endorsed the five
highway measures now before the
legislature, Oregon'9 first step toward
good roads.

BOUND TO GRAND JURY
ON SERIOUS CHARGE.
Alvln Harris of near Lostlne was
arrested Wednesday for shooting a
boy maimed Fred J. Jacob oni Decem
ber 10 last. At a preliminary hearing
before Justice Goodman, , Thursday,
he was bound over to the grand jury
under $1000 bonds on the charge of
assault with deadly weapon. Chris
Cook, a material witness, (was put
under $250 bonds.
The story of the shooting as giv
en at the hearing is, that several
fellowa were hazing the Jacob boy.
and Harris amused himself by shoot
lng near the lad's feet, one bullet
finally entering the upper part of
the leg near the groin. The. matter
was hushed up and .never became
known to the authorities until a
few days ago.
The wound healed but lately in
ternal suppuration started and the
boy la in a bad1 way, likely to die.
He was taken out to the La Grande
hospital, Friday.
