20th, 1910, all domestic dogs and
cats owned and held, within Wallowa
county, Oregon, will be. placed under
quarantine and will not .be permitted
to be moved from the above elatiud
Wallowa county, Oregon, except by
permission, of the, State Veterinarian.

all animal when not being used lin

What Hydrophobia Is.
DEFINITION: Hydrophobia Is an
sxtremely infectious disease of man
and animals, usually .traiiBuuttea oy
lltes.
Cause: The exa;t cause Is mot
known, but the virus hoe Ibeen oe
niotustratedi to be found In itlhe saliva
principally, as wU as In other se
cretions and exeretiona of aXiectea
animals,
ANIMALS AFFECTED: Man, dogs,
horaeis, cats, cattle, sheep, h,ogs,.poul
tvy a'.l domeatWakd animals; wild
animals, as coyote, skunk, badger,
wolves. Rabbi's are very suscept
ible and are used In making a posi
tive diagnosis, lai this .pairticular out
break dogs and coyotes seem to be
the principal carriers of .the Infec
tion. HOW CARRIED: From one ani
mal to another by biting.
PERIOD OF INCUBATION: May
range from a week to 'ten nvomrhs.
Usual period Is about three and six
weeks. For instance, If a dog is bit
ten by a rabid coyote, Jm from three
to six .weeks the dog goes mad, and
he In turn Inoculates others, If not
promptly restrained and destroyed. ;
SYMPTOMS: Have' three stages
of disease:
(1) Premonitory, or when first
symptoms were noted, as a desire to
lick or eat cold, smooth things, as
stones; there may be an Increased
foiuliiiese for owner (this Is particu
larly dangerous where children are
owaeraqf pet dogs; becoming morose
retiring, sneaking; filially the dog
dlaappaers. If not tied, and may re
turn home lrt a few dnye, wbea the
disease assumes the
(2) Second stage, whi.a may be
either
(a) Furious rable3 moat, common
and most easily irecogmlzed. The
dog froths at the mouth, toaa a
tendency to bite everything; a wild
look in. eye; haggard, emaciated ap
pearance of body, drooling at mooutih
and hoarse, guttural toairk or wfatae.
The affectionate, weli trained ani
mal becomes a wild., maniacal, snarl
ing, biting creature. This form Is
assumed when the brain is first af
fected. Ob) Dumb rabilcs, wtoeni eipinail cord
first affected. Tine lower jaw hangs
paralyzed; toe .tries to move, tout
sinks down on tola side; throat Is
conta-acted; tongue a livid (hue,' and
the animal is a pitiful object, yet
his salliva is as dangerous as In
the furious form.
(3) Third stage: Paralytic or last
period. The animal shows a paral
ysis of hind quarters, sways wtoen
trying to walk; the lower jaw relax
es completely ; the palsy gradually
extends over itihe entire (body, and
finally death ensues In a day or two.
Usually Inside of ten days from the
time the dog is noticed to be acting
"queer" toe ia dead.
Rabid coyotes lose their natural
shyness, enter towna, bite man' or an
imals, and die In an, unconscious,
paralyzed comdltionv unless kWled.
Cats usually disappear and die la a
short time.

PREVENTION: (1) Quarantine all
dogs. Keep 'tied tn a protectod

(2) Isolate all animals coming to
contact with rabid aniimals, and de
stroy them, If the3e contact animals
begin, to act suspicious.
(3) Exterminate 'the coyotes.

proven It successful. Dynamite
means death to coyotes. Sheep men
hope that coyotes will soon, 'be a

etc.
TREATMENT: Prevention Es
pecially quarantining dogs. If unfor

picious acting animal, to mediately
cauterlzs wound with a tot Iron,
carbolic acid, tOiric acid or caustic
potash. If possible, suck 'the wound.
