The American Federa tion of Labor closed the 30th annual convention by choos:ng Atlanta, Ga., as its meeting place for next year The entire list of officers, including President Gompers, Secretary Morri son and Treasurer Leunon, were re elected. ' The Western Federation of Miners' application for charter was referred to the executive council with author ity to act. The convention by unanimous vote Indorsed woman suffrage and later placed Itself on record as favoring the organization of all classes of la bor In this country, including negro. Some of the Pacific Coast delegates objected to the proposition to include the Aeiatic races and it was suggest ed that the remedy was the exclusion of Orientals. - Battling Nelson Knocked Out. San Francisco. For the first time In his fighting career Battling Net- son, a shell of the once great .pugi list who proved such a terror to men In his class, was knocked out beyond all dispute. Owen Moran knocked Nelson out In the 11th round of a scheduled 20-round event, his victory being clean and leaving no room for argument as to his complete mastery over the one-time champion. Income Is Three Billion. Washington. The net income of the 262,490 corporations of the United States which are subject to tax un der the corporation tax law was $3,- 125,470,000 for the year which ended on June 30. According to returns made to the Internal Revenue Bureau, the capital of the corporations was $52,371,020,572 and their bonded and other Indebtedness was $31,133,052,696. THE MARKETS. ,A Portland. Wheeling, W. Va. C, NOTES The railroad securities commission, of which President Hadley of Yale is chairman, held Its first meeting Mon day. The commission was created to investigate questions pertaining to the issuance of stocks and bonds by railroads. That the increase of a few m:lls In the freight on a pair of shoes was followed by an advance in price to the retailer of 10 or 15 cents and of 40 cents to the consumer, was de clared by Henry C. Barlow, of Chi cago, before the Interstate Commerce Commission. Secrets of corporations and the In timate details of their business are to be guarded by the government under the laws passed by the last session ot congress, providing for the filing of returns with the treasury deuartment for the purpose of assessing federal taxes. Secretary of the Treasury MacVeagh issued a ruling which pre vents perusal of the reports by the curious or by those who might bene fit unfairly by them. The members of the Board of Army Engineers, who examined all the gov ernment irrigation projects during the past summer, will report to Presi dent Taft the first of this week, and within a few days thereafter it is ex pected that the president will appor tion the $20,000,000 made available at the Inst session of congress for the completion of these projects. Colonel Moses E. Wetmore, chair man of the finance committee of the national Deniocrat'c committee, who was oue of the first- men of means to support W. J. Bryan's presidential ambitions, Is dead as the result ot injuries received when he was run down ou the street In St. Louis. Harry Orchard, convicted of the murder of ex-Goveinor Frank Stun enberg, of Idaho, is declared to have recently admitted that he declined an dTfer of parole from the Idaho state penitentiary. Orchard is said to have told his friends and the prison board that he considered the prison walls the best pro'.ection available for him. as he feared violence, even death, If released. ?. h. Oregon Is to have a- country life commission of its own, if the move ment started by the Umatilla county members of the Farmers' Educational and , Co-operative Union of America meets with success. Oswald West, governor-elect and railroad commissioner, will resign his position as railroad commissioner about December 1, and take a short vacation In California before assum ing his. duties as governor of Oregon January 9. The work of reseedlng the burned- over areas in the Crater national for est haB been checked temporarily by a heavy fall of snow within the forest. If a freeze should, occur within the next few days the work will have to go over until next fall. . H. C. McAllister, manager for the Home Rule Association, has filed a statement of expenses Incurred by that organization in the late cam paign. Total expenditures equaled $39,786.72 and the total contributions were $40,219.25. Twelve years In the penitentiary at bard labor was the sentence pro nounced upon Herbert Lambert for killing his wife, Margaret Grace Lambert, in a tent at Portland, July 3. Lambert, after shooting his wife, shot himself, but recovered from the wounds. The verdict of the jury was manslaughter. Killing elk in Oregon was expen sive for E. E. Sleret, of Gresham, tor on November 23 he was found guilty of such an offense and fined $300 by Judge Campbell at Oregon City. The offense was committed last January, but owing to various postponements the trial was not held until recently. An Immense body of timber land along the Siuslaw river, In Lane coun ty, has been purchased by San Fran cisco capitalists. The tract is said to contain 1,000,000,000 feet ot saw timber, which was sold at the rate of $1 a thousand feet. This would In volve a consideration of $1,000,000, the largest that has been made in Oregon for several years. A meeting of representative Asto ria business men was held to arrange for holding a suitable celebration next summer of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first white set tlement on tho Pacific Coast. A com mittee of five was named to select a centennial commission ot 17 members which will have entire charge of the arrangement. The Fels fund commission- dis bursed In Oregon during the late campaign through Its treasurer, H. VV. Stone, of Portland, $15,484.72. This amount was expended In publication of pamphlets and other literature dis tributed among the voters in behalf of tax amendments to the constitu tion that were voted on by the people and other measures proposed by the People's Power League. Prompted by Insane jealousy, Wil liam Ilassing, an electrical worker, fired two bullets Into his wife's brain F.nd, turning the weapon upon him self, sent two more into his own a moment after they met on the street at Portland. The woman died 30 minutes later at St. Vincent's Hospi tal, where both were taken by the police after the shooting. Hassing has a chance to recover. Fees amounting to more than the legislative appropriation covering the expenses ot the entire board ot con trol, were turned over to the board by F. M. Saxton, superintendent of Divi sion No. 2, representing money col lected In connection with water right adjudications for the past six months. There is still a, sum amounting to $1,234 on hand for that division, not payable owing to contests and certi ficates. For the first six months tees for this division amounted to $2,999.7$ and only $999.35 for the second six months. State appropriation for the support ot the Oregon national guard must be increased or the companies form ing one of the two regiments of myi tis must be disbanded, according ton statement in the biennial report of Adjutant-General Finser addressed to the members ot the legislature that will convene early In the new year.
