The advocates of state-wide test for tuherculosus among dairy cattle, are planning to get together and agree upon a method -for securing the pas sage of a law that will make the test compulsory. . Eastern Oregon is getting In lino for good roads. The first work Is be Ing done on what Is to be known as the Eastern Oregon road, more than 200 miles long, between Lakeview and Prairie City. In a quarrel over a game of dice in a Lakeview saloon where he was act ing as bartender, John P. Barry was shot and almost instantly killed by Louis Paysade, a Frenchman employ ed as camp tender for Dan P. Malloy, a prominent stockman. One ot the most interesting exposi tions ever held In the west in point of quality as well as in its educational aspect will be the Manufacturers' Food & Industrial Exposition, which opens at Portland September 12 for a two weeks' run. State Senator Thomas B. Kay, one of the best-known republicans of Ma rion county, has filed, his declaration of Intention to run for the republican nomination for state treasurer, and will make the campaign for the nomi nation at the primaries. Returns from the first carload of pears shipped from .Douglas county for the season have . arrived. The check was for 11740, representing 600 boxes at $2.90 a box, delivered at Roseburg. The pears were grown In tbe famous. Bradburn orcharjs, about eight miles southwest of Roseburg, and were of the Bartlett variety. To develop the water power on Warner creek, 'in Lake county, the Southern Oregon Water Power Com pany, capitalized at $300,000, largely Spokane money,- has been organized and soon will start work It is an nounced, on a $140,000 power plant to be used In supplying light and power. J. B. Eaton and Cbarles Galloway, constituting the state tax commission, and F. W. Mulkey of Portland, have been appointed as delegates by acting Governor Bowerman to the Fourth In ternational conferenca in the state and local taxation which will be held at Milwaukee from August 30 to Sep tember 2. - I One of the largest and most com plete "Western" celebrations ever wit nessed In the Northwest will be held At Pendleton, tbe last week in Sep tember, if the earnest efforts of many of Pendleton's prominent business men are realized. It Is planned to more than equal the frontier celebra tion held- at Cheyenne, Wyo., last year, and is to be from ' this time forth an annual "roundup." - -The rate of growth of yellow pine In -Oregon Is a subject of which the forest Bervice is making a special study this summer. This important tree has already been studied to some extent In the southwest, in California, and In Montana, but up to the present time little definite Information has been obtained about ' Its growth in Oregon. 5 ' The tax figures for Coos county, which have Just been completed In the office of the sheriff, show that the to tal valuation of the property in Coos county has Increased nearly $1,000, 000 over last year. The total amount of land In the county is 786,495 acres. The total valuation in the county $14,811,901 and the amount of tax to be paid Is $446.4SS. - Plans are under consideration by the members of the republican state central committee providing for two tours of the state by croups of state candidates. The proposed plan is for the candidates whose homes are In Western Oregon to go together to Eastern Oregon and speak and hold meetings at various points, all travel ing together and appearing and speak ing at the same meetings. - It ia pro posed also that the Eastern Oregon candidates for state office tour West ern Oregon in a similar manner. ' The work on the south Jetty has been started with funds raised by the Port of Sluslaw, and about 1500 feet of the long pier has been completed. It Is very solidly built, being con structed of rocks weighing up to ten tons each. The government has ap propriated $250,000 and $50,000 of this is available for immediate use. It is expected to take three years to com plete the work. The government started this 15 years ago and appro priated $100,000, but this was tnsuf Iclent and the work was stopped.
