C, Feb. 17 The United States Census Bureau is making extraordinary preparations to ascertain ibhe approximately ex act number and value of live stock on the ranges In the United States on April 15 next, the date of the live-stock Inventory, as required by the act of Congress providing for the thirteenth, census. Fearful that for one reason or an other thi live atock raisers may be deterred from freely stating the number and value of theto holdings, the census bureau Is exerting un usual efforts to assure the ranchmen and farmers, especially of the western range states, that their In terests, nether personal or corpo rate, can not possibly be affected In any way by their frank and full disclosure of their live-stock posses sions. ' The information gathered by the cenaus office Is held strictly, confidenitial not only in respect to the fact that under no circumstances Is it ever imparted to any one not connected with the census office, but in respect to its ever being' given to any other branch of the govern ment. Ashley Gets Contract; For Court House Furniture and Fixtures The county court has awarded the contract ifor furniture for the court house to Ashley, the furniture deal er in Enterprise, hla bid of $1607.10 being deemed the lowest and best of the four bids, two! by county deal ers, one fiom Portland and one from Spokane. The furniture Is of Quar ter sawed oak throughout, finished In wax. It will come from Eastern manufacturers. Fredi S. According to the La Grande papers, Judge Knowles has rendered a decision cif the Injunction,, suit tat the case of the O. iR. & N. vs. Hec tor McDonald, adverse to the com pany and dissolving the Injunction which restrained McDonald! from tearing up the railroad! track where it crosses his farm. Clerk W. C. Boatman has not yet received any notice 9t the decision. Mr. McDona'd had a proviso in) his deed of right of way to the railroad company requiring that tho tracks should be laid within two years trom -he date of tho deed, otherwise the deed should be void. Tho tracks were not so laid, McDonald brought suit to -entrain the company from ayliu-; the tracks Just before the tracklayers reached his land, the In junction was issued and there t-he matter has rested) until) this decision. The case will be appealed to the su preme court, the company's conten tion being that it was prevented by he panic and other causes over which it had no control, from com plying with the strict letter of the deed. Rinmons The boardl of directors) of the Com mercial club met Thursday night, selected L. B. Payne as club secre- a-y and started things for the big open meeting that Is to be held the second week in March. The board organised by electing, B. B. lioyd chairman and A. F. Poley secretary. The vote for Mr. Payne, as club secretary was unanimous, and It is believed a mighty good se lection has been model. Mr. Payne moved to this city from Iowa last year, bought property and identified himself with the town from the start. He is a booster of a practi cal kind, has ideas and knows how to express them. The board spent considerable time In preliminary preparations for the big, open meeting and social to be held early In March. F. S. Ash ley was appointed chairman of the committee on program, Dr. CI T. Hockett on the social side at the meeting and C. S. Bradley on re freshments.
