SATURDAY, JANURY 22, 1910. OREGON'S GREAT FUTURE. From the Insurance Monitor. If there is one state In the Union more than another whose future Is pregnant with promised prosiperity, that state to Oregon. Another gene ration will probably witness the trans fer of the world's commerce with the countries of the Orient to the Pa cific. The nations who dominate this great ocean will control the trade of tihe world. The fact has been rec ognised by our o,wn government and earnest e Worts are being made to forestall this mighty movement that wllll make of our Pacific Coast the connecting link between the nations of the Far East and of the West. A generation hence It twill be on this coast, rather than on our Atlantic seaboard, that the eyes of commerce will be turned. For more than three hundrefd miles tho western boundary of Oregon is washed by the waters of this mighty ocean, with the City of Portland on its northern border, the apparent gateway through ,whlcb this commerce will find its ,way. Here is a young state one and one half times larger than all New Eng land, with Us wealth of minerals and of timber, and at yet with a popula tion of leas than 700,000, rapidly swelling from the best of our immi gration and destined soon' to reckon its people by the millions. In this great anil growing state Oregon Life Insurance company la the chief repre sentative of domestic life insurance, with no company having any real stiartjn the life insurance world on the .whole iPaclflc Coast nearer than San Francisco, seven hundred and fifty mile away, to compete, and with. Its nearest Important Eastern competitor noarly two thousand miles away be yo id the Rockies It is easy to see what a prospective (future must open up to such a company, established in the important City of Portland, With all the advantages' of ft pioneer domestic institution of the state. We believe that every Important state should, If possible, have (its representative life Insurance company, In which the citizens who prefer to put their trust. In domestic Institutions may be able to secure protection. We trust that this role will be filled by Oregon Life. The Oanby Tribune says that an electric railway la projected from Cauby to Mollala, which will run through some of the best timber land in the state. It wl'.'l make farm lands very valuable by furnishing cheap and rapid transportation for products, and as the timber Is clear ed ou'f the stumps will follow and gardens take the place of the wild. The intention la to bulla the line with kcal sLeerlptlons ! Putting It Delicately. At a cricket iiiuti-b played In the park of a baronet It was fouud neces sary to secure the services of one of the footmen ns umpire. In due course the burouet went iu. aud the secoud ball deliwred hi in he stopped with his leg, and the cry of "How's thatf was raised. It was the foot wan on whom the declslou rested, aud he said Id a half apologetic tone; "I'm afraid 1 must say 'Not at ouie, Sir Jehu." "Not at homer retorted the baronet. "What do you mean!" "Well, then, Sir John," replied the footman, "if you will "are it. I mean that you're hout:"Londou Answers. In winter time milk goes to the buy er In a chunk lnatend of a quart, pny a Glasgow paper. The people in Slbe rla buy their milk frozen, mid for con venience It is allowed to freeze about a stick, which comes ns a handle t carry it by. The milkman leaves om chunk or two chunks, ns the ense mnj be, nt the houses of his customers The children in Irkutsk, Instead of cry Ing for a drink of milk, cry for n bltfl of milk. The people In winter time d not say, "Be careful not to spill the milk," but "Be careful not to brenl; the milk." Broken milk is better thnr spilled milk, though, because there is an opportunity to save tho pieces. A quart of frozen milk on a stick Is n very formidable weapon In the hand of an angry man or boy, as It is possible to knock a person down with It. Ir kutsk people hung their milk on hooks Instead of putting it In pans, though, of course, when warm spring weather comes on they have to use the pnns or palls as the milk begins to cui-lt and drop down the hooks. - Chamberlain's Cough Remedy Is no i common every day cough mixture It is a meritorious remedy for all the troublesome and dangerous com' plications resulting from cold In the head, throat, cheat or lungs. Its members culled themselves "Uusbua nln" whence, by the way, came our word "ussushIu" and used to get up courage for luelr deeds of atrocity by iloses of the drug culled "basheesb." This Is obtained from ludluu uemp, and It Is from the seed vessels thut the substance Is tukeu which yields the polsou so famed In history and ro mance.
