The need of a city hall and fire de partment houae wa3 discussed at the meeting of council December 6, and Councilman Hockett was appointed a committee of one to sea C. O. Kno dell about buying a lot south of the White Front barn and along the alley. There Is a one story dwelling on the lot now that would be moved off and a two story stone or brick building erected, the lower story to be used 'tor the fire apparatus and the upper as a city hall. It is a central location and would answer the purposs admirably. . The matter of extending the city boundaries on the souih and we' was also dlscu3sed. Street signs were ordered made and put up at street corners. An arc light was or dered installei at the corner of Boyd court and Depot street. G. I. Rat cilff was glvea permission to extend the water mains to his hill property at hda own expense, the water rates to be applied on the coat. Follow ing are the Claims Allowed. J. Assessed NValue of Valley Towns Nearly One-Fifth of Toal Roll for 1909 Is In Four , Ci.ies. Nearly onefi.th of the assessed valuation of Wallowa county is in the valley towns. Enterprise, Joseph, Wallowa and Lostine. The toial for the four towns is $1,640,650, while the total for the-county 13 $8,676,770. Following Is the assessed valuation of the towns: Enterprise $651,220 Joseph 557,350 Wallowa 329,105 Lostlne 102,975 This is a substantial increase in each town over last years figures, Joseph leading with arv increase of M09.705, Wallowa and "Enterprise fol lowing with $64,315 and $63,025, re spectively. The valuation in the Enterprise school district, the smallest in size In the county, is $819,005. The Jo seph district ii $741,920 find Wal lowa district $630,090. Russian Thistle Along R. R! Tracks Worst of Pests Has Secured Start In County Says A. Go'lnick. A. Gol'nlck of Asotin county, who has been visiting his sons just west of town, sounds a note of warning 4n regard to the Russian thistle, which he says has already gotten quite a start along the railway track be tween Lostine nd Wallowa, with a few plants this side of Lostine. The railway company and all road super visors near the railway should be compelled to keep the way cleaned dl this obnoxious pest, the worst with which farmers have to contend. Tlie plan'ts shojld be cut down green, If posulble, but when cut ripe or dried should be gathered In piles and burned. One branch contains thousands of the minute seed, and as the plant, is light, easily carried by the lightest wind, one little branch may seed a big field. They j are considered the worst ojf all plant pests In Dakota and Minnesota, where Mr. Gollnlck formerly resided and the most rigorous measures are taken' to eradicate them. The seed has been carried here, in freight cars as the plant was un known In this county before the ad vent of the ral.road and this first year his grown only along the right of way. Re avis property on River street from the Wagner corner to the flume. The price is said to be $2000. The purchase in cludes tha frame building formerly used as a meat market, and which will be remodeled into a temporary church. It is reported the society will later build on the ground south of the temporary church, and not on the Main street;, lots bought some time ago for that purpose. WALLOWA COUNTY AHEAD OF UNION IN NUMBER OF INSTRUMENTS. Wallowa county has forged ahead of Union county dm number of real estate transfers and number of in struments filed (or record. The total number of the latter filed in the recorder's offllca at La Grande from July 6 t3 November 26 last was 3898, while for the same period there were filed in the office here 4302 instruments, or 404 more than In Union county. 1 At the samo time the recording fees averaged for four months in Union county, $251.23 a month. The receipts for recording during the same period' in Clerk Boatman's of fice were as follows: August $305.. 80, September $341.95, October $340.. 25, November $320.70; total $1308.- (Continued on last page.)
