SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 1909. MIS-STATEMENT CORRECTED. Where did the Wallowa Sun get Its Information in regard to the rate hearing before the state commission in thi3 city? Certainly not first hand or It would not have so brazenly mis. stated the case of the people. Even Railroad Attorney Spencer probably has more honor about him than to thus grossly ml3 stat3 his opponents Entemrise dil not ask that the rate to this city and Wallowa be made the same, and at the same time oDjeci n a blanker rate on wool. There is nothing in the complaint Hied. .which the Sun has frcj access to, or in the verbal hearing on which ti base such an assertion. Thi San owes it to its readers, if not for the sake of truth Use f, to make the cor roctlon. No misstatements can alter the ruin of th situation. Enterprise asked for lower rates all, along the branch It askel also that wool be reated the same as other coromodi les. It H not a question of wnetne "orth End shipments come to Wal owit or Enterurlse. for on account if the hiffh rates on this branch ttu people out there go to Lewiston, 1' .nile3 farther and over a worse roaa rue. when the road was first com jleted a few shipments for the Nortl 2nd came over this brancn, out a ha Wallowa representative at the learlne said, no more come as the ..ewiston rates are so much lower. Kiitprnrisn asks that the distance ai if r be extended over the branch roni Elain that the people of the or h Country, In common with the ejt)le of the reit of the county, may :et their coods In the moat convenlen ,vay. If that is do.ie, Enterprise can ;asiily take her chance for North Enc rade in compe i ion with any omei awn. As dlsc'oxej at the neanng h cost of freighting goods from iteim-lse to Flora is lower thar from a:iy other town, and would more ban make up the slight freight dir ere.ue belwen Enterprise and wai owa. nrobably four cents or less, .vlth the distance tariff In effect. Modern Woodmen Will Conduct Free Sanatorium for Its Member. At the last meeting of the execu- Jve council of the Modern Woodmen society, held at the headquarters of he Boclety In Rock Island, 111., it .vas decided to conduct that society's lanatorlum. located at Colorado Springs, Colo., for the treatment of hembers afflicted with tuberculosis, 'ree of all charge to members. The Modern Woodmen society, sev ral months since, acquired 1,3 SO teres of land wl'-hln seven miles of Colorado Springs, and has established hereon an up-to-date sanatorium, the ent colony plan being employed. The first colony was opened for the eceptlon of patients ou Jan. 1, 1909. t is equipped to care for CO patients, o which number admissions will be .Imlted for the present. ' The tents are octagonal structures, with shingle roofs, canvas sides, hard wood floors on solid cement founds ions, heated br a central ivuit. equipped with all modern convenien ses, such as telephone, etc., and each tent will accommodate one patient. An administration building for phy tlclans, nurses, dining hall, baths of ill kinds, etc., stands in the center of the colony. Dr. J. E. White, formerly of the Nordrach ranch sanatorium, the niedi al director in charge, states that mly thwe consumptive members who ire curable, or whose lives may be prolonged for a considerable length of tme, will be admitted as patients. The wisdom of this rule is apparent. Rigid medical examination as a con dition precedent to admission will be Insisted upon In every case, and spec ial blank forms have been prepared for this purpose. A movement it already under way to equip the second colony plant of 60 tenta. Each tent or tent house, completely equlppel, represents an expense of $250, and a number of lo cal camps, or lodges, of the Society have decided to donate tents. As there are over 13,000 local ramps of Modern Woodmen, and over 1,000,000 members, it is anticipated that sev eral colonies will toon be equipped in .this way. The members and local camps of the society have voluntarily con- tributed to the sanatorium fund over $0.000, and at the last national con venUon a permanent tax of ten ceuts Per member per year was voted to the support of thU work. The last official Woodmen reports Indian Congress Introducing the SDAY lands. A band of Sioux Indians, fresh their first acquaintance with civilization. Funny Clowns. Bring show that during the years 1891-1907 Inclusive, 14.5 per cent of the total insurance losses in those years, or $9,065,000, reiulted from this cause. As the mortality expenses of the WooJmen society has been unusually favorable, being but 70 per cent of the expenses at all ages under the National Fraternal congress table," a death rate of but 6.29 per 1.000 or but 4.98 per 1,000, If the experience of the first five membership years be Included the heavier insurance losses inflicted upon other societies experi encing a higher mortality may be con servatively approximated. If the Woodmen society, with its exceptionally favorable mortality, finds it to be "Good business" to fight consumption in this way, why should not other fraternal societies, life Insurance companies, labor organi zations, the national and international cuaich bodies, etc., find it profitable, from the viewpoint of business or be nevolence, or both, to take such action? Each life saved to the Modern Woodmen society, by means of this unitorlum, will, it Is stated represent a saving of $1,700 the average am ount of the Woodmen policies in force at an expense for treatment of ap proximately one-tweutiath of that sura. In the broader sense, each life saved means the preservation to the family of its head and bread-winner, and to the state of a useful, self-sustaining citizen.
