The construction work on the Wal lowa county railroad as far as Los tine is completed and will be turned over to the operating department to day. Engineer Brandon has moved all five gangs of men, numbering in all 220, to this side of Lostlne and will complete the work through to Joseph within six weeks. A work train brought a surfacing gang ol 50 to Enterprise, Thursday; and e gang of 30 went on to Joseph, toui miles below town is a gang of 40, while another gang of 30 will be brought up from below Sunday. The fencing gang of 40 are four miles UiU s.de of Lostlne. There Is no official authority foi tha rumor that a passenger service will be started oa May 24, although the track Is in condition for fast time so a train could easily make the round trip In a day. It develops there will be considerable opposition to a strictly passenger train If It should mean the cutting down of the freight service to a trl-weekly basis. The La Grande papers say a mall car will be put on the branch train in the near futu.re PHONE LINE TO TROY BARTLETT AND GROUSE The telephone line from Bartlett, Grouse and Troy was connected with the Home line at Flora, Monday, and there Is now communication through to this city by the way of Sled Springs and the government Chlco- Wallowa line. Manager Harry Thomas of the Home company went out to Flora and made the connec' Hon The toll charge Is 25 cents THE, from the Ta'ley towns to Flora, and 25 cents nilditional to Troy, oroase or Barilett. The line from Bartlett to Flora was built and is owned by the fann ers, who formed a company, bought the material and hired an experi enced telephone constructor to super intend its erection. J. W. Macau ley, a prosperous Grouse farmer, in town on Jury duty, says mutual com panies in Asotin county are seeking a connection with their line, and it Is desired to have a direct line to En -erprlse This would be of great ad- Vantage both to this city and to the North Co.ntry. The Metzler-O'Brien case was one of the first of fie 24 cases brought in last September involving the 4 north 41 entries in Wallowa cqunty.
