TAGGART, I Enteqrise, Lostine's First Stock Shipment Temporary Yards Put Up Flour Mill Rushed With Orders Local News. Lostlne, Dec. 1 The first shipment of stock from this station was made Tuesday by Frank Graham who sent out two car loads of hogs. A tem porary stockyards was put . up a couple of days ago by Mr. Graham, and a number of volunteer assist ants. He says there will be lots of stock shipped from Lostine, for it does not pay to drive stock far ther than Is absolutely necessary. This he proved by spending over $30 to put up the temporary yards to ship two car loads rather than drive a few mlle3 to another station. ! The Lostine Flouring mill is do ! ing a rushing buisness, turning out j 150 barrels of flour per day, yet Is behind on orders. J, Rohrman, Jos j eph merchant, was here Monday and I contracted for a carload. I The school gave a basket social Wednesday evening of last week with a program and sale of baskets, pro ceeds amounting to $67 going to fur nish new lights for the school build ing. W. Eugene Knox, impersonator and reader, is billed for December 24 for the benefit of the school. Mrs. Charles Fltzpatriek gave a card party last Tuesday evening to a number of her friends. Miss Zelma Ogbourn, primary teacher in our schools, spent Sun day with her parents on Alder Slope. GARDEN OF EDEN. (By Mrs. Adah L. Downing of Wild Rose Home Farm, Troy P. O.) Mr. Palmer of La Grande has re turned to spend the winter on his "Eden" ranch. Chief Ranger Eaker resigned his position with the government to re side on his farm at Sommerville, Ore. Before his departure he per suaded Miss Lola Richman, of the Grouse country, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ebert Richman, to go as a life partner in the said farm. While everyone demurred at such a proceeding, as It was taking two social favorites from our community, everyone joined In wishing them the best of success and happiness. The happy couple were joined in holy wedlock at the home of the bride's parents on November 15. The groom gave an infair party at Ficker's hall on the 18th, which was a most en joyable affair and lasted until dawn began to break. Messrs. Courtney and Fleming furnished good music. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams gave a card party at their home, "Elk Horn Springs," Eden, on the evening of November 28th. After pe dro and bridge had held away for a couple of hours and sweet enliven ing music by the graphophone was rendered, everyone concluded to dance, Instead of trying to keep their feet still. County School Superintendent Con- ley and wife visited the school and friends at Troy one day last week. A Mr. Foster has charge of the school at Troy. A new schoolhouse is about completed. Encouraged at the liberal response and the bright outlook for new beet fields In Wallowa county, Manager Fred G, Taylor of the (Amalgamated Sugar company and F. S. Brarawell, formerly with the company, returned last evening from AVallowa county, where, with Salt Lake officials of the company, they held meetings at Jos eph, Enterprise and Lostine. The response for acreage was lib eral. Some of the Influential men of Lostine and Enterprise have signified theii' Intention of setting aside tracts of land for sugar beet purposes and many others have agreed to plant smaller tracts to beets. Con ditions are so favorable, says Mr. Taylor, that It Is more than likely that the company will soon make sugar beets an Important Industry in Wallowa county, especially about Los tine and Enterprise. Rohrman, one of Joseph's enter prising merchants, went to Lostine Monday, and purchased a carload of flour. Mrs. Merritt went to Elgin Monday for a stay of several weeks. S. C. Hlmelwrlght of Imnaha came In Monday to trade. His son left Tuesday for Portland to attend school. Mrs. Peter Baudan and her daugh ter Josephine returned Monday from La Grande, where they had been to see their daughter and sister, who is attending Sacred Heart academy. Mrs. O. Sorenson of . Anaconda, Mont., came Monday on a visit to her brother, Rev. Father Bradley. Mrs. Annie J. Edgmahd and daugh ter of Clio, la., came in Monday to visit her son, D. K. Edgmand of Chlco. Mrs. A. A.
