I believe there- a story told of Mark Twain that In youthful days, being sent out by his mother to weed a certain flower bed. and find ing more weeds than flowers, he fame back In and asked It he might not "flower the weed bed." Our little Alfred probably has as great an aversion to work as had the youthful demons. Admonished to pull iom rather large weeds In the back yard, after a faintheart ed lift on one of them, he shouted: "Mamma, how do you think I'm going to pull these weeda when the whole world Is hitched onto them?" STARTING RIGHT. People in general, and even those who transact considerable business with ral'.roal companies, are unfanill lar with the economics of railroad lug. Those who make a pretence of knowing something quote tonnage statistics, rate per ton per mile, to tal and net receipts, amount of water In the total iu3e of stock, etc., etc All that Is meaningless unless the de tails are given with an understanding of them that ii seldom or neve: found except among railroad men themselves. Fact of the matter Is work-aday railroad economics are a sealed book to outsiders "It's all Choctaw." What woald farmers think of men who know nothing of practical farm ing fixing a maximum price for which they could sell their products, that price being based on cost of seed, cont of labor and 6 per cent on original Investment and all estlraat 3d in a good crap year, taking no heed of short crop terms, or the hun dred and one incUontal cost items arising from chance or weather,, accl dents or peits? There would be re bolllon, pretty quick. A li'.t'e thought on this line will make anyone see there are two sides to the rite regulation problem News Rucord readers are aware that this paper has never been an advo cate of regulation for two reasons first, It has always been a failure for 18 years, didn't regulate anything but ths salaries of the regulators; ana second, because the rates fixed are admittedly guesswork. o, at air. Cotton of the O. R. & N. said in his talk at the Enterprise Banquet Thursday night, there is need of a better understanding be tween the people and the railroads in order that both sides get a fair deal or tne alternative is government ownership. And between the two guesswork regulation by prejudiced commissions and government owner ship. Mr. Cottoa said the railroad men themselves would take the lead in favor of the latter. Mr. Harriman said, l:i substance, the same thing In speech at Kansas City, a couple of years ago. If people don't want are not ready for government ownership. In ths name of fairness they should strive for a better understanding of the rate regulation problem. There Is no bet ter way to do this than by personal acquaintance between railroad men and the people who use the railways. such a was promoted by the ban quet In this city. The people of this county and the O. R. & N., in their mutual dealings are starting rlghl. If the O. R. & N. officials think half as well of thli city and county, an their hosts do of the guests, a big start In a muUrtl almiratlon society was inatio at the banquet Thursday night. To Extract a Splinter. When a splinter has been driven deep Into the hand. It ran be ex tracted without pain by steam. Nearly flu a wide-mouthed bottle with hot water, place the In lured part over the mouth of the bottle, and prei3 tightly. The suction will draw ths flesh down, and In a min ute or two the steam will extricate the splinter and the inflammation will disappear. November Woman's Home Companion.
