Praises City For Civic Enterprise Portland Journal Lauds La Grande For Voting Wa'ter Works Bonds. Under the caption "A Progressive Oregon City," 1 he Portland Journal had the following laudatory editorial about La Grande, which Enterprise can fairly take as applying to this city also, as we wilt spend nearly as much proportionately for water works as will tbe Union county seat: Among tbe cit ies of Oregou that are attracting admir ing attention because of doing tliiups. La Grande is taking a high rank, and this largely because of the great enter prise being carried on there to secuie an ample supply of the best kind tf water. This is one of the prime essentials of any town, after it has grown into one of a few thousand inhabitant, and has ambition and opportunities to grow and amouut to sonu tiling, municipally. La Grande will spend $160,000 for a water and newer system. The bonds were oied over a year ago, and have recently been sold in Chicago. The water will be secured from a pure adequate mountain stream, at a point 17 miles from the city, and will be brought in an immense flume to a reservoir and willybe sufficient for many years to come. Surplus flow will be used to operate a modern, complete sewer system. There will be water enough for Are-fighting purposes, so that the city will et revenue not on'.y from water consumers, but from power consumer. It will run its own light ing plant also. This is tbe way to do things. Thus a city grows and be comes worthy to grow so long bs such enterprises are conducted on the square, are free from graft, and partisan politics is eliminated from them. , The cltj can henceforth .be healthful, clean, in all ways progressive. Corvallls has done the same, If not on quite so ext3nslve a scale. Eu gene and Medford are preparing tc do so, though In their and some other cases, the problem is greatei because a surely ample supply o. aurely right water is not so avail able. But these and other Oregor. cities will succead, will solve these problems. La Grande is setting, an example. Now watch It grow anc prosper. MUCH 8UGAR BEET LAND.
