On Snake River
W. F. Rankin returned Friday eve
ning from the mining region of
Huake river where in company wUh
Aaron Wilson, he has just finished a
contract for driving 60 feet of tunnel
for J. E. Kennedy of Hosalta, Wash.,
and E. A. Zindel of Evtreit. Wash.,
on their Deep creek mining property.

gave the follow lug information ( that

"I fully believe that the Hnake river
mining belts have a future that will
be a surprise to the people in the min
ing world. .No one can discribe those
immense mineral zones no that one
can comprehend the vast oceana of
wealth that Is stored up In those bills.
"1 have teen interested In the Huake
river mines for the last eight years and
the more I see of these leads and the
more I work In them the more I am
satisfied we will have paying mines as
soon as we get transportation. .
I liave been at work for some time
on my last contract, and during this
time throe mines, the Electrolytic com
pany, the Copper Mountain Co., and
K. A Kinder and J. E. Kennedy have
sent a mining expert of world-wide
fame to report ou these three mines.
Mr. Cammel, as superintendent of the
Electrolytic Co., i elped him in his re
pat for that company. What his
official report is I do liot know, hat he
did suv it would be a mine ami in at

Professor Samuel Augbey of Spokane,
mining engineer and expert, is a man
about HO years of a He was for 13
years professor of Latin and Creek in
the University of Nebraska and for
several years professor of geology in
their schools. You will find bid to he
the V. 8. government repoits on geol
ogy for years. He was sent on an ex
pedition down the Snake river In 1854
by T. S. llayden, and has also made
collections of geological specimens for
Geologist Dun a.
In our work for Copper Mountain we
found their main tunnel to be 300 feet
iu length with over half of tbU length
in concentrating ore; also one drift
from tlvis of 90 feet with good ore for i
'if distance; a drift to the south of
main tunnel 270 feet back from portal,
this tiu foot drift is in ore all the way
and is at a depth of over 400 feet. We
also have an incline shaft at the portal
of Main tunnel. This has a depth of
100 feet and is in concentrating ore.
"We found this mammoth lend to be
at lea-t 000 feet wide and com eniratlng
ore more than hall way across. The
professor named this to be a mine with
shipping ore fnni the surface. This
company has 14 claims In solid
square group with over 650 feet of
tunnel drifts and shafts driven.
The expert savs all we lack is trans
portation and we will surely have that
us the O. R. & N. has COO teams at
work and are putting on all the men
and teams they can get. Idaho county,
Idaho, is putting a wagon road from
Whitebird to the state line at Copper
Mountain Bar. Tills will give us a
chance to get light machinery and
other supplies, and as Superintendent
of Copper Mountain, I will sny we ex
pect to crowd the woric idis coming
year to full capacity, and in years to
ccmie with such miues as the Iron Dyke,
Peuoock, Great Kastern, Blue Jacket,
Electrolytic, Copper Mountain, and
other promising prospects will place
the Hnake river In the foremost ranks
of shipping mines in the Northwest."
The following delayed news notes
from the Suake river by Mr, Rankin
are still of Interest:
Tucker and Russell began March 27
to lamb 5,000 ewes on their Snake
river range. It is quite stormy for
lambing but they are meeting . with
fair success.
Sparks aud Davidson are engaged
runuing a croxscut tunnel on Sparks'
claim called the Chalice. This is a
promising lead and Mi. Sparks claims
It assays $40 to the ton, mostly gold.
The Horner boys are movlug their
cattle to the higher range.

Ami now If we can make up our
minds that no outlying community
would be treated unfairly by changing
tiie county seat location, and that It
would not bring about a division of
the county, and that in such a way
that would not benefit a lot of us, with
all its hardships, we will know just
how to vote Flora Journal.
There is one part of the foregoing
that can easily be Investigated and the
answer found that will straighten the
matter out so every person In the
county as well as the north end can
make'up his mind. That Is the matter
of the division of the county. Under
the law all that reeds to tie dope is to
present to the secretary of state a peti
tion signed by a comparatively few vot
ers and the whole quest ion la taken out
of the power of the people of Wallow a
county to help or hinder. The people
of the whole state will decide then
whether we shall pay double county
taxes. W nuld Joseph start such a
petition? Would . Wallowa help It
along?
Wallowa will prntMt madly just
now, before election, that she would
not? Joseph wilt assure ua that the
never dreamed f such a thing. May
Iss not. But what were the terms on
