In the ordinary elections they have often, and The Telegram believes wisely, looked to the men without reference to tho party brand which they wore In this way they have disciplined party and at tho name tinio raised tho standard of the local public service. T-ut in the mutter of the election of a lit itcd States Senator thoy have presented to ihem a different problem. There they come In touch with the party of the Nation, DEMOCRATIC COLUMN Space bought by County Committee DEMOGtfOTIC TICKET. United States Senator Qso. E. Williams Sheriff Edgar Harvin ' County Clerk W. C. Boatman Assessor B. F. Miller Treasurer F. A. Reavis Surveyor R. I. Long Coroner W. C. Ketchum Commissioner C. VV. Brown the party of Roosevelt of which they so warmly approve, and the verdict which they render the gen eral public must accept as very largely the judgment of the voters of Oregon upon that administra tion. Our elections occur at an odd season of the year. We here fire the first gun of the Presidential election. The verdict is made un in advance, so far as the rest of the country is concerned. The Nation knows that the state is overwhelm ingly Republican. It likewise knows that the administration of President Roosevelt has here re ceived enthusiastic approval. That administration, disguise it as we wiil, is now on trial before the country. By the general masses of tho people .it has been warmly approved; by the corporate and plutocratic interests it is bitterly reviled, nnd, while little is, being dono openly, there is deep down a smouldering fire of resentment that cannot be extinguished. For the, very reason that the plutocratic forces of the country hate the Presi dent, the masses of the people admire and approve of him. If under such circumstances as these it goes forth that the people of Oregon in June elect a Democrat for Unid States Senator, the administration receives a blow in the house of its supposed friends that it is conceivable may have a serious effect upon the plans of the friends of the administration and upon the great contest in No vember following. It must not be forgotten that much quiet work has been done in recent mouths against the administration. One may see the effect of it upon every hand' in every community-the clacquers busily engaged in ham stringing Roosevelt, and ineiduous ly undermining tho platform of principles which he lias been stead ily putting forth in his messages and speeches. If a well-known and supposedly safe administration State falls by the wayside in June, the prestige of the administration severely suffers and no man who honestly faces the question can see It other wise. In the present campaign and the coinlrg election Statement No. 1 is not on trial, liecause both candidates for the United States Senate stand square toed ond flat footed upon that platform. Neither is Chamberlain nor Cake, as such, on trial before the people. The question Is one not of these men, but ( f broad National import, leading to a victory which will mean a shout of ringing encouragement to the National admiulttratlon or a vital blow delivered in the house of its friends. This is the real proposition tiefore the people of the State, and it Is one of the main rea sons why The Telegram will through out this campaign give H. M. Cake Its heartiest support and urge as strongly ns it limy the voters of the State to siistaiu the administration at a mo ment when it is more seriously on trial than at any other period,, of Its whole history. He believes in the people and will obey their will In the election of United States senator. He Etands for the development of the resources of Eastern Oregon. Original Court House Man. U. X. Williams of Lostine, Demo cratic candidate for county judge, was the litst to announce that if elected he would build a moderate priced court house in wnicuever town is selected ns the county seat by the voters at the June election. Mr. Williams' position is one ttiat will doubtless bo endorsed by the voters. It provides for settling the county seat question for good and all with the least expense to the tax payers. If it was desired to begin the erection of the building next year, the money subscribed by the county Heat could be used and if more was needed arrangements could easily be made with the contractors. Following is Mr. Williams' position. ' "f do not favor the erection of a court house at tho present, nor do I favor any levy for that purpose the coming year. I believe that a county that has been twenty years without a court house should have one in the near ruture, and my plan would be to make a levy of 1 mill in January 1910 onthelUO'J assessment an udiii'.ional levy of )i mills in January 1911 aud to build a court house iu'lDll to be completed by the time the lease on the present court house expires. I do not favor the erection of a court house to cost over $20,000. I will If elected favor the building of a court house under these conditions wherever the county seat may be located." Signed, II. !.
