Oregon Railroads.
The first annual report of the railroad
commission f Oregon shows a pitiful
little total of 72 miles of railroad were
constructed in this great state during
1907. To the north of us in Washina-
ton, ia state smaller in area and no
richer in natural resources, the number
of miles of construction in 1907 was
exceeded by only four states in the
Union, namely South Dakota, Louis
iana, Texas and Florida. In one re
spect -however, Orpgon railroads are
among the leaders. They killed 48
persons and injur d 100 more.

Saffocate Squirrels With Smoke.
The farmers in the vicinity of
Juliaetta, Idaho, have been much
annoyed by squirrels, but have just
discovered a new way to get rid of the
pests. A piece of dynamite about two
inches In length is lighted and placed
in the hole of the squirrel, after which
the opening of the hole is tightly
closed. The smoke and gas suffocate
the squirrels inside.
