"Pace is the best, assessor we have,
ever had in Wallowa county," is a re
mark you can hear anywhere in the
county when the subject of assessing is
talked, lie has unearthed more prop
erty and thus lessened the burdens1 on
the "little fellows." Unlike assessors
in many counties who sit in their offices
and let deputies do the real work, "Sam"
lioas out and sees the property. He has
probably teen in more places in Wal
lowa county more times than anyone
else. He is one of the first, if not the
first assessor to follow the letter and
spirit of the law in assessing at full val
uation. Mr. Pace can stand on his
record without fear of results.

Mr. Cake savs of the statement:
"I endorse statement No. I because
experience has shown the old tnethod
of election of United States senators to
be unsatisf; c ory. Under such method,
for more than 40 yeais, such influences
have affected the election of United
States senators in Oregon that but few
have been chosen until the Inst moments
of the legislative sessions.
"The deals and deadlocks (saying
nothing of corruptions) incident to the
election of senators in Oregon have
absorbed tho time and attention of
state legislatures to the disgrace of

and the neglect of needed It islation.
"I further "endorse statement No. 1
for the reason that I am in favor of the
election of United States senators by
direct vote of the people, and lavor mi
amendment to the constitution of the
United States providing for "same. In
the absence of such an amendment,
statement No. 1 accomplishes the same
result by obligating the members of the
legislature to elect the choice of tl-.e
people, as evidenced by the vote at the
June election.
