Forewarned, Forearmed. In announcing the purchase of the News-Record, the editor and publisher, H. A. Galloway, was personally inclined to have stated the eimple fact of having bought the paper, plant and business and let it go at that, preferring that the people of Wallowa county should take it for granted that he would do his best to give them a newsy county paper and apply the principle of the square deal alike to the editorial and news columns and to the business end of the office. The vicissi tudes in the management of the paper during the last few months, and the further fact that a week ago the new owner was an entire stranger to this favored section, require a statement of policy and per sonal introduction to the patronrf and readers of this paper. To get over the disagreeable part first, will say that Mr. Galloway is a country newspaper man of many years experience, having worked on papers at Aledo, 111., Newton, Iowa, Troy, O., and Oregon City. He came here to make it his home if he liked the town and country. His opinion of Enterprise and Wallowa county is evidenced by his having bought the News-Record and sent for his family. The News-Record will be an absolutely independent newspaper in its news columns. All printable news will be published whether it suits the personal views of the editor or not, bo long as it is legitimate news and not mere rumor or opinion. The aim and endeavor of the News Record will be to print every week all the news of all Wallowa county. The News-Record will be independent in its editorial comment, the best interests of Enterprise and Wallowa county,-and not a political brand, being the firHt and chief governing factor in our policy. While independent, the News-Record will be in no sense neutral, and it ex pects to have an opinion and be not afraid to state it on all public questions that its editor has sense enough to at least partly under stand. Begging the pardon of our readers for this lengthy who's who and what's what, this sermon comes to an end with a request for the indul gence of our readers for a few weeks if the paper does not come up to their expectations. There are many things needed in our office before we can put out the newspaper we desire, but they shall be supplied as soon as possible. ' More Houses Needed There have beeff 75 or 80 houses erected in Enterprise during the last two seasons. All are occupiod and newcomers are searching in vain for houses to rent. The growth of Enterprise now is exceeding the prediction of her most enthusiastic friends. What will it be when the railroad comes? Meanwhile there is a crying need for more residences. A dozen more should be built before winter sets in, to accommodate the present demand. None So Good J. II. Ragsdale of Kent, Oregon, who recently bought the Cavi ness ranch for $38,000, will make his home in Enterprise. Mr. Rags dale vibited Wallowa two years ago and was then impressed with the great natural resources of the county but hia business interests were such he could not leave Kent at that time. Since then Mr. Ragsdale has been all over Washington and Oregon looking for the beet place for investment and says he found no county as good as Wallowa. That is the verdict of all shrewd business men who give careful investigation of the opportunities for both labor and capital in this empire county. Mr. Ragsdale id welcomed to Wallowa county and to Enterprise.
