It Is Colonel Moreau by all tbe saints, your admirable self, niy dear fellow:' heartily exclaimed tbe younger man. lapping tbe other on tbe back. "These lights are so dashed disobliging 1 didn't recognize you. I have been watching tbe game for some time through that window," pointing to one on bis tight, "and you must remember that a state room lau't private so long as tbe cur tains aren't drawn. If 1 bad known you Were aboard I wonld have hunted you up long ago. for yon know bow I love a' game, colonel, aud hence this veutured lnrruslou. Have you any ob jection to making It three cornered?" His bow Included Mr. Randall, now blinking at the table. 'Sorry, but quite impossible, suh." replied Moreau shortly. "I am already this gentleman's master fob a matter of ten thousand or so be has been playing In dam pob luck and our next wager Is for fifty thousaud. Too high fob yoh. I calculate?" "Not at all, I assure you," lightly re- plied the Intruder, smiling Into the other's venomous eyes. "Come; If your friend Is willing, let me sit In. I really Insist upon losing to 'you. colonel. Won't you introduce me?" Moreau hesitated, trying to read tbe other's eyes. Then, apparently satis fied, he turned to the nodding Mr. Randall, saying: "Have yob any objec tion, sub, to making it three? My friend, sub. Mr. er Mr. Jackson of New Orleans." "Honored, suh! Honored:" replied the planter, arising and extending a frank band. "I warn yob. suh, that the Randall luck has turned and that yoh will surely lose. Stay out. sub; stay out!" he added Impressively, pat ting tbe other's shoulder. "Fob I am about to make a killing, and 1 don't ; want yob to be among tbe dead. Tbe colonel and I are old men of the world, suh. but this is no place fob a youug man like yob. I trust yob will take my advice In the spirit In which It Is offered, fob I am a father, suh, aud and I like yob. In about half an hour." "I thank you for your advice, sir." -said the Intruder, with sudden gravity, while gently aud unobtrusively be steered Mr. Randall to bis seat. "But I am afraid It has come too late, for card games of all kinds are my weak ness. Perhaps If I bad received It when I was younger But 1 see our good colonel Is Impatient." "as no stakes are up 1 reckon I'll give my check for tbe full amount should 1 lose." Pocketing bis roll, he gluuced satirically at Mr. Jaeksou. If for a presumable amateur who oc casionally indulged In a gentleman's game merely for the sake of passing the time Colonel Moreau hud exhibited a wonderful aptitude at shuffling and dealing his performance was now com pletely overshadowed by that of the young Intruder, whose lightning deft ness wob almost uncanny. Talking nonchalantly and brilliantly, be stack- ed the deck with a beautiful n re , clslon, fascinating in the extreme, even while the colonel's wutchful and sus picious eyes never for a moment re laxed their vigil. Owing entirely to this marvelous aud criminal skill Mr. Jackson won on . bis own deul and, luck following him. won also on that of Mr. Randall. As eucb and every one of the colonel's undertakings were highly estimable he naturally held the best .band when, for a moment, the cards were In bis power, aud It speaks eloquently for Mr. Jackson's large cburity of Judgment that he refrained from criticism even wbeu acutely aware that the middle aged Creole bud rather clumsily garnered bis third ace from the bottom of the deck. But as youth must be served, esneclallv when possessor of su h consummate skill qb that owned by Mr Jackson, tbe lutter handsomely won bis fourth showdown with surprising euse, verve and dash. "Well, tbnt winds her," airily ' re marked the colonel, arising and stretch ing bis long arms. "One hundred thou sand ain't such a bad cleanup, 1 reck on, but yob alwuys were lucky, yoh young scamp, and there's no playing agHinst it. Yob even topped my fob kiugs. 1 calculate tbe Randall luck finished a very pob last How about yoh theory now. aub?" The planter did not reply, for it is somewhat dllllcuii 'or a but newly ruined man to sense tbe full bumor of bis condition, in silence be drew to ward him the pen and ink, while for a long moment be stared at tbe white sheet of puper, upon which be was about to give title to all which he owned. Be and bis children were beg gars, total and complete. This was tbe turning of tbe tide, bis royal home coming. For a moment be bowed his grizzled beud; then, shutting bis teeth against all thoughts of tbe future, seized tbe quill pen. For a Randall must show tbe world how It can lose. A Randall must be beaten at nothing even at playing tbe fool. "Yob name, sub?" he courteously In quired, turning to the youug stranger who bud proved so fortunate. "Eugene Klrby, sir." "What?" exclaimed tbe planter in a dazed manner. This accomplished. Mr. Randall arose unsteadily and walked to the door, where he turned and for a moment surveyed the smoke fouled room with Its litter of empty bottles. "tSood evening, gentlemen." be said gravely, "and thnnk yoh for the obli gation. Good evening." Head erect, be walked out and very softly closed the door. "Since when have you contemplated such an admi rable partnership?" be blandly in quired. "Ever since I first saw yoh play. Klrby.
