Wattoira County (Chief tair County Pioneer Paper Established In 1884. Published ever Ytursdav by The Enterprise Press Office East side Court House Square. Entered In the po3toffice at Enter prise, Ore., as second-class matter SUBSCRIPTION' RATES. One year $1.50 Three months 50c Invariably in Advance. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1909. 1909 WAS GOOD TO US. The year Juat ending has been the best 12 months in the short histor) df WaUowa county and of the citj of Enterprise, the county seat. There has been a larger and more rapid increase of wealth, and the entire, year shows no large entry on the debit side of the account. The first and largest factor in the general diffusl:n of prosperity among all the people, has been tht railroad, for by it cash markets havt been created at aU the stations for everything (the farmer raises. This has given cash to those who have hitherto had to depend on barter ol what they raised to secure what they needed. A secondary result of the rail road is the beginning f cultivatiot f the vast areas of wheat land in ijis county. It is the estimate of ( xiservative banker, who probably is in aearer touch with conditions than layoue else In the county, that 10, 000 more acres cl land in the vlcin lty of Enterprise alone, will be seed ed this coming season than ever be fore. Viie aacond tig factor in wealth sain has been tie high prices foi everything of which we raise a sur plus grain, hay, cattle, hogs, horses sheep and wool. This, with gooc crops, has made the producer king and he fits the throne so well it is easy to see he was cut out for the Job. Goodbye, 1909. You have been good to us. Welcome, 1910. Beat "09 If you can. DR. COOK'S FAILURE. Nine out of ten people are truly sorry that Br. Ccok failed to prove his case. The prooii submit ted to the Copenhagen Universi-.v ocve been pronc-jneed insufficient by -ie committee that examined them. Peary's projtf3 wo-ild probably have odea equaiiy incomplete if examined by an impartial jury. Peary is such a cad that tbe av erage man would prefer the honor to have gone to anyone rather than to him. He will now reap a Tich rewar in money and fame for his many years of endeavor, but he will cev or have the love, admiration or evea good wlU of his countrymen. As for the naval clique and the rich parasites who compose the Peary Arctic club, they are and al ways will be held in coatempt by every honest man. The navy officers should not be blamed. They are trained to be lieve a lie Is Jusified by the end if the end sought li to keep up the fic tion of mfallibiity that is fostered to protect incompe.ents from being found out. The idle rich who have for years ought notoriety by belonging to the Peary club, have shown in the last few months they would otop at no crime, however mean and despicable, to accomplish their desire. Peary's fame wi.l be but ashe of disappointment during his lifetime. It seems strange thatalthoagh we have had the initiative for seven years none of 4he beautiful booka and Illustrated literature issued by the Commercial club of Portland, and all the other booster organiza tions throughout the state, have a word to say abojt it. A etranger might tonk that in Oregon such a thing had never been heard of. He would conclude that it was no more a government ruled by the people than New York state. Yet the init iative has attracted more attention to Oregon than all Its other adver tising put together. "The Oregon way" is spoken of in Great Brit Ian, Canada, Australia, every state in the Union, and all through the Latin republics. It should be men tioned as an asset by our boosters, along with our glorious climate and Mt. Hood. Island City TANNERY Now Ready for Business Robes and Furs of all kinds a specialty.
