The Spokane rate decision, while 1' Is not as broad as it should be, helpe the intermountain region some. It will help a gTeat deal more in the future If the Portland, Seattle and i San Francisco hogs keep up the.r yawp about being entitled to the same ! or better rates from the east than ! towns in the interior from two tc 1 five hundred miles nearer easteri: shipping points. The plea of the Coin hogs, wh have fattened for years on over raj merits by people in the Inland Empire is Uiat because of water competitloi they are entitled to a less rate tha' Spokane or Baker City. This plei Is absolutely without equity. To meet water competition, thi railroads make say a rate of 1 15 r ton on some commodity from Chicagc to Portland. If they are hauling tha commodity at a profit at that rate then every point east of Portland is Justly entitled to a less rate. Thert cannot possibly be any ifs or and: lbout that. If the railroads hauling that com aiodity from Chicago to Portland a. (15 do so at a loss, then somebod) is digging down in his pockets aa making up that deficit. The peopk between Portland and the Rock.' Mountains have been doing that digg ing for a good many years when the liad to pay on gojds shipped fron Chicago the coast rate plus the loca rate from Portland back to the in erior town. But the people here an ired of thus helping to fatten tht Coast hogs, who are now putting u) i big howl to keep their unfair ad ant age. If the railroads can't meet wate competition to the Coast on Easten Jiipments without loss, then th ailroads shouldn't try. They havnM my right to rob Peter to pay Paul. If water transportation is such t remendot:s boon to Portland an Seattle, let them get their goods b ater. If the Coast jobbing house' have such a big "natural" advantage 3ver Spokane, what are they howlinf so about. The truth seems to be the Spokane bouses will get all the trade if given Jie just and equitable railroad rates :hey are entitled to. The teitimony of three or four local men who have made a personal examination of the Flathead and Coeur d'Alene reservations, is that nine-tenths of the land is no better, Jid by far the largest part of it is not as good as government land right here in Wallowa county still open for settlement. The only ex planation for the tremendous rush is the gambling feature connected with the filing. Most men like to take a chance. If Merchant Jones chanced off a 75 cent scarf pin and this paper mentioned the fact, the postoffice de partment wouldn't allow that issue to o through the malls. The govern ment itself however conducts the biggest kind of a lottery when it chances off millions of acres of reser vation land. That's all right of course, and highly moral because the government does it Cholera Infantum Cured. "Something like two years ago my baby, which was then about a year )ld, was taken seriously ill with iholera infantum, vomiting and purg ing profusely, writes J. F. Dempsey if Dempsey, Ala. I did what I could o relieve her but did her no good, ind being very much alarmed about Jer went for a physician but failed o find one, so came back by Elder 3ros. &. Carter's store and Mr. Elder recommended Chamberlain's Colic, Jholera and Diarrhoea remedy. I procured a bottle of It, went home is quickly as possible and gave the baby a dose of the remedy. It re lieved her in fifteen minutes and oon cured her entirely." For sale by Burnaugh & Mayfleld. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. John McDonald to N. H.
