another. Select your breed with care
and then rdck to it. AH the leading
breeds have good points, and the mat
ter of selection is more a question of
individual preference than acrthing
else.
In beginning with pure bred stock
the best plan for the average farmer
to follow is to purchase a pcre bred
male of the desired breed and proceed
to grade up bis herd. There are two
principles cf breeding that should be
kept in mind in this work. The first
Is the old law that "iike produces like."
Is the main this law holds good. and.
other things being rquaL the offspring
win resemble the parents. The second
Is the law of "atarism," or the tend
ency of the offspring to take after j
some remote ancestor. This is where

to any serious extent. This long con

pore bred boll when mated to grade
cows has much more influence over
the characters of bis offspring than
tbe mothers have. This is most striking
ly shown when a polled boil is mated
to horned cows. Nine out of every ;
ten of the calTes will usually be polled, j

into high priced beef or to use the feed
for profitable milk and butter produc
tion. Of coarse if the cows are pure tred 1
also there is iess chance of the calves
assembling some inferior ancestor on
their mother's side, and improvement
will be mere rapid and certain. The
cost of an entire herd of pure breds is
very great, bowever. and profits will
come more sorely by the grading up
plan. After this" has been carried on
for a time, so that the farmer has
some experience in breeding and car
log for high class stock, a gradual
start la pure bred females may be
maae by buying a cow and calf or a

The most Important points to look
for in draft horses. wfci-h are the
most profitable kind to raise on the
farm, are power and endurance. Tow
er is indicated by size, compactness
and heavy muscling, especialiy in the
hind quarters. Endurance is shown
by a strong constitution and fine qual
ity, especially of limbs.
Ftrict observance of these points in
the selection of a sire of any kind will
give yon an animal that will in a few
years bring about a great Improve
ment in your herd. Pedigree should
not be negleced entirely in picking
out a sire. Its chief value Is in show
ing that the animal is pure bred and
that his an-estors were of the type
which you wish to develop In your
herd. To determine the latter point,
however, requires a longer study of
herd books than most farmers have
