o f the police an d fire d ep artm en ts receive reco g n itio n , bu t
th e people of A shland have every reaso n to he ju s tly
proud of th e ir police and fire bureaus.
A sh lan d is noted up uud dow n th e Pacific- c o ast be­
cause it is singularly free from crim e o f a ll d escrip tio n s.
A nd the reason fo r th is enviable reco rd is because o f the
day-by-day w ork of its police force. T h ese m en m ay no t
be gettin g th e ir nam es in the head-lines, b u t th e y are
alw ays on du ty , 24 hours out o f ev ery d a y , an d it is
because of th is fa ith fu l service th a t A sh lan d citizens can
sleep w ith th e ir doors unlocked, w ith e v e ry assuranoe th a t
th e ir rest will be undisturbed.
T he same applies to the fire d e p a rtm e n t. I t h a s hoeu
m any,m ouths since A shland h as h a d a serio u s fire. F ig-
•uredton a pro ra ta basis, the c ity ’s fire loss w ill com pare
favorably w ith any city on the coast. D ay a fte r d a y the
