In talking to Fire Marshal Pomeroy, he informed me
that you were one of the moat capable chiefs in the state,
and I heartily agreed w ith him.
Other chiefs, Mr. Pomeroy declared, have allowed
such cases to get by them until it was too late «to remedy
Not so with yon, however, lo r you g o t on th e J o b at-once,
a n d possibly saved the city a much larger fire loss.
You have kept the fire lose to w n exceptionally w ell
this year, and I hope you receive the additional equip-,

Dear Children:
This w ill be A untie A sh land’s last appearance, hefore
Christmas, and for that reason, she w ishes now to wish
each and every one of her children a Merry, Merry Christ
mas.
’
i
She knows that this Christmas is not going to be a
very bright holiday for some o f her children, but she
also knows that some o f the more fortunate of her child
ren are banding together, in an effort to aid those who
have been less fortunate.
Thursday, an article appeared in The T idings, telling
o f a little old lady, who was facing the poor farm, but
who was m aking a last attem pt to remain in her home.
F rid ay morning, The Tijdings ^office was beseiged
with telephone messages, inquiring as to the identity of
the lady, the callers declaring that they would do every
thing possible to aid her.

There will always be those who allow their Christ

Ashland F ruit Growers,
Ashland, Ore.,
Dear Folks:
The Ashland F ruit and Produce association is now
in the m idst of a serious problem. W ithin a month, it will
have been decided /whether or not it is profitable to
curry on the work in the future.
The association is your association. Take it away
for a year, arid you would feel Sits loss. But it cannot
continue to operate at a loss. It is the same as any other
business, it m ust have support.
Other cooperatives have gone through this same per
iod o f construction. One, the Sun Maid Raisin Growers
association, worked for more than ten years, in (wilding
up an organization, and finally were successful only when
they decided that contracts were necessary, and those
whose contracts were held by the association market all
their produce through the association. The good as well
as the not so good produce is handled by the association,
and raisin growers are now enjoying prosperity because
o f their foresight iu backing their association.
The same thing could be done here, and a strong
marketing organization "built up which would repay you
handsomely for your efforts.
