Opens telopes and giraffes are rapidly being killed out because there is no longer any range for them. Even where they are protected by law, they die out because they are depriv- ed of food or water. • . . We are perhaps quite pleased with the total character of the billion and a half people that inhabit the world. But do we need another half billion so bad that we can afford to make the whole world just a place for human beings and those animals that they use for food of cloth ing or service! Tan we afford to have no more elephants or giraffes in the world liecause We ate breaking Africa up into farms to produce more human beings! —j—— < . . * Can w# wipe out our national parks, in the 'Vnited States, just because we want to produce niore foqd in the mountains! , • . Ought we not to force ourselves to make a little more effort, and produce more food on the plains of central California, rather than to mar the beauty spots of the mountain for the sake of a little cheaper food production! We sacrifice money to theaters and dance halls and other forms of amusement. We can afford to reserve some public resources to the clqpner, more inspiring amusement that is afforded by preserving our wild parks, and our wild animals. ASSOOIATIOMB ENOOURAOB UTILIZATION The National Lumber Manufacturers Association of fers prizes amounting to $2,000 yearly, as a forest 'con servation measure, for devices and ideas leading to econ omy of material in manufacture of lumber and utilization at waste. • Discussing methods of more olbsely utilising our timber resources, M. W. Stark of the American Column and Lumber Co., Columbus, Ohio, recently said5 “ The waste in the lumber industry from the trefe to the finished product is a matter of common knowledge. We recognize, that letter utilization of our forest resouceos can be brought about and that if successfully’ accom plished it must be done by and through the lumber in dustry itself. ' “ The work of the various lumber associations which has been quietly going on for years has advanced .tlie cause of better utilization in a marked degree. It has dis closed the great possibilities in this field and has made clear the advantages to be derived from more intensive work by the lumber manufacturers.” The Citizen« Bank of Ashland • - z 0 I V Zh 4 B J Ai---- y -"^cngMi /I HT. . 1 > ? \ à ' 4 the Wat lasne, that Mrs. D m Stevens was hostess at the Al pha club instead ef Mrs. Don Spencer. They have a large productive capacity with an enormous supply of rawmaterial uiql ■Emir, lieuce are able to su^piy the eiitire West and have a surplus for export. Western manufacturers are invading the markets of Latin America, Australia and China. It is estimated bv the Mercantile Trust Review that more than one-third of all the tmber in'western states conissts of the pulp species. THE LOOT OP TAXATION Another effort will be made in the next California legislature to increase the gasoline tax from tteo cents to three cents a gallon. This is in line with the genera? trend of loeal tax levying bodies. Once a tax is establish ed, the procedure is to increase it as rapidly as possible. Instead of striving to get more efficiency in return for each dollar of taxes ex|*euded, the mania seems to la* la get more money to spend and the bigger the mohey- •pendinh machine is built, the more money it takes to keep it going. The result is constantly increased taxes« Just* as you can prove you^ identity by your finger-prints— So you can prove payment of your bills by your cancelled check stubs.
