They spend '» 4,000 000,000 on passenger automobiles and save something like »10,000,- 000,000 a year. But they spend less than »3,- 000,000,000 a year on eduteatlon through tax-supported schools. This mass of figures on extrava- gant America was shot forth to day by (he National Education Association to prove that school costs are not more than society can bear. The research division of the association has Just com pleted a painstaking investigation of the expense of running Ameri can schools and other American Institutions. People guard against rainy days by paying insurance premiums of around »4,000,000,000 a year, the Btudy showed, but education’s pre paration for the future doesn’t fare nearly so well. The cost of education Is 56- 100 of one per cent of the nation’s estimatbd wealth of '»320,803, 000,000, It was pointed out. The total educational expenditure for £83,894, of which elementary and secondary schools took »1,68»,- 671,296.
