CRITICISM UP TO DATE
“ Of late years,” said a distinguished professor to
his class the other day. “ literary criticism has greatly
gained in breadth and geniality.” There is much color
to the statement. The personalities that marked differ
ences of opinion in the age of Dryden and Pope, and made
rival reviewers fierce antagonists off the literary arena
as well as in it, have been, on the whole, conspicuous by
their absence in these more sedate times. Even the petu
lant flippancy with which Jeffrey assailed Wadsworth, or
the Quarterly Castigated Keats, has been more or less rele
gated to the discard, and for a long time nothing has ap
peared in print to equal the savagery of the attack made
on Montgomery by Macaulay.
The veneer of conventionality is, however, very thin
and not difficult to pierce and there are some tempera
ments that are eternally on the ache to pierce it. When
a literateur of some note wrote a few years ago to a mag
azine which had published a rather 'unfavorable notice
of one of his works and used the locution, “ You should
not allow your man to take such liberties,” he was, and
meant to be, deliberately insulting to the reviewer in
question.
.
a„ a lad\ novelist and critic arrived
nt New lo rk from London to take up her residence in
this country. She at once showed the mettle of her pos
ture by firing off certain broadsides at some of her fellow-
citizens in the republic of letters. Of one of them, well
known for the production of a few whimsical works, she
said, “ So-and-So is the ass who sits in the Cafe Royale.”
She is apparently fond ot that short and uglv word, for
speaking ot a much discussed book by another writer,
she damned it with faint praise by the assertion, “ Gen
ius ought to be allowed occasionally to make an ass of
itself.”
It is to he hoped that these effervescences will be
toned down by contact with the hard facts of literature
as it is practiced and of life as it is lived in the United
States. If not, and if the samples given are to he regard
ed as syinptomatic ot a new era in criticism, the prospect
is startling, not to say terrifying.
