THE RADIO’S FUTURE
C repe hangers are predicting that the radio craze is
looked to fizzle out. They are wrong. Unquestionably,
interest in the radio, is experiencing a slump at the pres­
ent t ime. • It is only a natural reaction, due for most part
to the fact that to those who grasp only a few of its
possibilities, it is becoming commonplace. Only a few
months ago it was heralded as a marvel as great as though
a man had arrived from Mars.
Manufacturers of radio equipment are of the opinion
that the slump in wireless enthusiasm is due in part to
tile summer season. Their theory is that most people de­
ne to spend die evenings out of doors, and they predict
that the autuinm v 11 bring a revival of interest.
An old handbi 1 comes to light in the East advertising
one of the early c monstrations of the telephone at the
city hall in Lawrence, Massachussets, May 28, 1887. The
handbill reads:
“ 'Phe miracle telephone! Wonderful discovery of the
ages! Prof. A. Graham Bell, assisted by Mr. Frederick A.
Gower, will give a wonderful exhibition of his miracu­
lous discovery, the Telephone, before the people ofcLaw­
rence, when Boston and Lawrence will be connected via
the Western Union Telegraph, and vocal and instrumental
music and conversation will he transmitted a distance of
27 miles and received by the audience at the city hall.
Prof. Bell will give an explanatory lecture with this mar­
velous exhibition.”
'Pile telephone at that day was considered a marvel
and swept popular fancy overnight. Then it suffered a
slump. Many predicted that it would never develop into
commercial use and that it would soon pass the way of
countless other inventions of that and proceeding times,
just as similar predictions are being made now with res­
pect to the radio. But the telephone became one of the
greatest blessings of mankind, as will the radio. The
radio, weird and as marvelous as it seems, is still in its
infancy as was Bell’s telephone in 1877.
