nam e for m ountain laurel.
N ow adays the laurel is not so plen
tiful.
People have broken down too
i
m any p lan ts and pulled up too many
o thers by the roots. Still you may
find some of these low, scraggl.v bush
es if you a re fam iliar with the coun
tryside. F o r in nearly every hilly p a rt
of the states, from Mukie to Ohio,
from Florida to C anada, a few a t least
of these a ttra c tiv e shrubs are grow
ing.
T he roots of these p a rtic u la r plants
reach out for surprisingly long dis
tances, seem ing to enjoy prow ling
about in th e loose soil of the m oun
tainsides. Yet, w ith all th e roving
tendencies of the roots, the patches
of p lan ts do not spread, but rem ain
about th e sam e size from year to year.
Calico-bush is an old-fashioned name
for m ountain laurel, a nam e th a t some
country people think Is the only name.
Spoonwood is an o th er queer nam e by
which you may hear th is sam e plant
called.

STEPHEN WEINBERG
One of G reat City’s Tragedies.
An old-tim e tragedy of the Central
M arkets, P aris, has been recalled by
the death a t an advanced age of a
once rich woman, who fo r m any years
m ade a poor living th ere overturning
garbage cans and selling anything of
value she m ight be able to find th ere
in. H er nam e was unknown, and for
nearly half a century she was merely
called “Princess.” F ifty years ago it
was fashionable fo r persons of high
society in P a ris to pass a riotous night
In the cafes and sta lls of the m arket.
On one occasion a fashionable woman
one of a gay* party, was robbed of
money and Jewels, persum ably by tier
escort. Left penniless, she refused,
for reasons easily surm isable, to com
m unicate with her husband or her
fam ily In central France. Instead she
sought em ploym ent and gradually fell
Into extrem e poverty. She got her nick
nam e owing to her Invariable habit,
when asked about her form er life, of
re p ly in g : “Ask no q u e s tio n s ; I am a
princess from a f a r country.”
