T he m ost flagrant source of gaso­
line w aste lies in idling th e motor.
Many drivers believe gasoline con­
sum ption to be slight w hile idling,
and th a t by avoiding use of the sta rte r,
they a re saving the sto rag e b attery.
To be correct, th e b a tte ry is much
b e tte r off w hen used norm ally, not be­
ing allow ed to rem ain fully charged
and practically inactive fo r long p eri­
ods of tim e. On the o th er hand, fuel
consum ption w hile idling is su rp ris­
ingly g rea t because th e vacuum in the
m anifold is so low th a t a very rich
m ix tu re is required in order th a t the
heavy fuel now In use m ay reach the
cylinders.

—th e m otor overheats—and th e raw
gasoline dilutes th e cran k case oil.
L ubrication a t th is slow speed is in­
efficient because th e splash from the
connecting rods is m inim ized.
R apid acceleration, although de­
sirab le in traffic, is an expensive lux­
ury, using much m ore gasoline than
gradual speed Increases. U nnecessary
and violent application of the speeds
and b rakes will w ear th e bands p re­
m aturely, s tra in every p a rt of th e
c ar and speed tire s tow ard the Junk
pile. On long stre tc h e s of open road
th e d riv er will obtain b e tte r resu lts
by using the hand th ro ttle Instead of
the foot accelerator, if one is Installed

uneven gas feed caused by th e foot
fluttering up and down on th e foot

providing a steady flow of fuel to th e
engine.
Many drivers labor u n d er th e Im­
pression th a t it is econom ical to leave
the « park advanced to th e lim it and
run in high speed as long as th e m otor
will hang on, hut th e sp a rk should a i­
rw ays be reta rd e d as soon as th e m otor
begins to labor. A continually reta rd e d
spark Is equally harm ful. T he spark
settin g should alw ays be ad apted to
the conditions under which th e engine
is operating.
