WALK FAR FOR MOTOR BUS RIDE Chinese Enthusiastic for Travel In Vehicles That Are New to Their Nation. "It Is no uncommon tiling for a poor Chinese to take a motor bus ride for a couple of hours and then walk back borne because be cannot afford the re turn Journey," .;uys William L Irvine, trade commissioner of the United States Department of Commerce, just back from a tour of Investigation of the automotive markets of Asia. "From this you can conclude safely that education of the Chinese Into the Joy and utility of the motor vehicle is not a thing of the disrant future. What the Chinese do need Is roads, and they are being built, but under far from propitious conditions, and the motor cur Is the cause. "The desire to ride In motor vehicles Is responsible for at least 'JO per cent of the road construction that Is now going on In China. Here is how It works out : A group of Chinese are attracted by the bus idea; there is no road, but by paying kumsha to the authorities they secure the right to construct one. Usually It Is a dirt highway and the builders are given an exclusive franchise to operate vehicles over It. "The rich as well as the poor rl.le In the busses and It Is not long before some of the really rich decide to buy u car for themselves so that they can ride over the route in splendor and comfort Instead of In a Jam. Ono the rich man lias a car of his own lie wants to go farther tlmn the bus road will tuke him and bis Interest in the extension of the road Is aroused. And so It goes on progressing In geo metrical ratio ; every car means more miles of road, and every mile of new road means more cars, the irea of motor widening until some day, though probably In the far future, China will be as well provided with motor high ways as the United States, and her painful transportation problem will be solved." Scottish Laborites Bar Hobnobbing With King Lendon. The dour Scots of the labor party In the house of commons have sternly denounced participation In any royal functions. Most of then signed a declaration they would accept no Invitations to such nffairs "when there Is so much unemployment" in their constituencies. Only about a half dozen withheld their signature. The English members of the party were not asked to sign, but It Is un derstood they are about equally divid ed on the question. When the subject was first discussed by the party a short time ago It whs declued, by vote of 38 to 37. that the liberty of In dividual members should not be re stricted, but that the party Itself would not accept such invitations. It Is now said the matter has been re considered, but that the party's policy has not been announced. "Dr. Pierce's medicine has been so very bene ficial to me that I am glad to give it my recommendation. Doctors said 1 would have to undergo an opera tion, but after taking the 'Favorite Prescription' I found that an opera tion was not necessary. During one expectant period I suffered with inflammation and became so weak and rundown I could not do my work. Doctors again advised an operation, but instead I began tak ing the 'Favorite Prescription' and it soon put me on my feet. My health returned, 1 had practically no suffering, and my baby was very healthy. Since that time whenever 1 have felt badly I have taken the 'Favorite Prescription.' It always makes me well in no time." Mrs. Isabella McLachlan, 7f8 Mich. Ave. Go to your neighborhood drug store and get Favorite Prescription in tablets or liquid. Pig iron is so called because the molten metal is run into a long mass with shorter pieces attached to it at right angles. The long pieces are called the sow, and the shorter are called th9 pigs. LARKS ARE SINGING nno THOSE hopeful Individuals who keep their gaze on the towers of Utopia, glinting like gold In the far-off dreamy distance, give thought to the golden rule and put Its fine precepts Into actual practice, the larks are al ways singing. These humans have their trials and difficulties, "even as you and I," but with them all, they manage to wear a smile of content. They go about their duties, however discouraging they may seem, with a cheerfulness that gives inspiration to the discontented and fault-finding souls, frequently losing their way and fulling In the mire of despair. They know intuitively when to speak and when to curb their tongues, for they have learned the most difficult of all arts, the art of self-control, which the venerable sages will tell you Is the first stepping stone to worldly success and an enduring happiness. Hope never deserts them, even in their darkest hours. She holds her blazing torch over her head nnd bids them follow. So the gloom of somber night Is transformed to day, and the trusting disciples move from place to place, con fident of their ability to find their way to the hills where the larks are sing ing and the sky is forever light with glorious sunlight. The world owes a debt of gratitude to these optimistic people which It never can pny, and you and I, being a part of the world, are likewise delin quent and possibly thoughtless of our Increasing obligation. We are too self-centered, too greedy for gain, too faithless. We brush aside the weak in our pur suit of earthly dross and trample them under our hasty feet, never stopping to look back to see whether we have hurt them. We forget that we all are of one flesh, and if we have Injured them, we have Injured ourselves. Every day the Wise Keeper of the Book of Life is calling on some debtor to blot out his or her delinquencies, al ways hanging over his or her head un til the account Is paid In full. If you have canceled your obliga tion and kept the faith, the day of reck oning will have no terrors, for you will find you are as free and happy as the larks singing in gladness all about you when the dawning Is rosy and the air is fragrant with the scent of flowers. STRIKE IN RHUR SPREADING French Block Red Demonstration at Wanne More Miners Out. Essen. The strike movement is spreading throughout the Ruhr and fresh walkouts among the metal work ers and miners are reported in nearby unoccupied territory. A general strike called at llamborn is affecting the iron works there be longing to the Stinnes interests. Com munists iuanifestants at Wanne be came so threatening that the French intervened for the first time, as a re sult of which the demonstration col lapsed. The sale of alcoholic liquors has been prohibited in the entire disturbed area by the German authorities, but the regulation is not being greatly ob served. The communists in Bochum extend ed their position Monday, but the city firemen and civilian volunteers, wear ing white arm bands, still hold the ftrehouse. The communists for the third time stormed this position at daylight Monday, the fighting lasting more than an hour. The shooting was the heaviest since the siege began, hut only a few casual ties are reported. Further attacks were expected tonight, and in the meantime the reds are in control of the western part of the town, the factory district, the whites holding the business quarter, where the hanks and chief shops are located. Two shop keepers in the working district were taken as hostages, and other shop keepers likely will be seized unless food prices are reduced. The communist efforts at Duessel dorf to reduce prices were blocked by the report that security police were proceeding to that place, in conse quence of which the control commis sion disbanded. Derricks Must Be of Steel. Because of tho high winds prevail ing in the Alaskan petroleum fields it has been found advisable to build the derricks of steel instead of wood. Lincoln vs. You Lincoln belongs to the apes. Tie was a man among men and all the world toduy recognizes his genius of character. Lincoln was self-taught. Instead of waiting for someone to pound knowledge Into him, he would walk miles to secure a book that he might pursue the quest of knowledge which was a supreme passion with him throughout his life. Lincoln instinctively knew that knowl edge was the key that unlocks the door to fame and fortune, or any success that man desires. He went directly after knowledge to prepare himself so that when his chance came he would be ready. You may look handsomer than Lincoln; you may have more native strength than Lincoln; you may have an intellect that could easily be developed; but If you have not the burning desire to develop yourself, you are certain to stick In the mud-sock cluss. Knowledge is distinctly a matter of In clination. If you do not secure knowledge you are Just as certain to suffer for your lack of development In a mental way as you would certainly deteriorate physically if you laid in bed all the time and would neglect to develop your muscles. Lazi ness leads to pain and failure. If you In sist on being lazy, the law of compensa tion will force you to pay compound In terest for your Idleness. Von will be whipped and scourged and made to do the meanest work of the world. The hard laws of necessity are sure to overtake you. You must eat and people will Insist that you earn what you eat. The whip of necessity will beat your bleeding back and the sharp tongue of a heartless world will tear to shreds your sensibilities. When you are stretched on the cross of neces sity, people of this world will crown you with thorns and drive Into your flesh, nails expressing their scorn. Lincoln knew that the world will never forgive failure. Logically he equipped himself to succeed and he did succeed. You, too, Cfin succeed, hut you must pre pare yourself for the battle of life. The great, st asset In life Is a strong character anil the ability to express your self. If you ere dumb as a dog you will receive the reward of a dog, the crumbs from some rich man's table, who under stands the way to express himself. The great mass of men have made no effort to develop themselves. Nearly all are capable of infinite development, but they do not realize It. They are paralysed by the thought that ihey are Inferior when in reality the only different be tween a successful man und themselves Is development. They could easily grow If they would get busy and develop themselves as Lin coln and other great men have done. You do not have to be a super-man or a giant of Intellect, but you do have to be Just a little better than the average to be selected to occupy a seat of honor and ease where you will work less and get more. If you simply develop the stiff back of a Jack-ass and the physical strength of a mule you will naturally he paid for brute strength and nothing more, because that Is all your equipment will enable you to render in doing the work of the world. Lincoln wisely learned to talk convinc ingly. We are offering T r. fri iderloj HOUR Law's course on "Mastery of Speech," which will quickly develop your ability to express yourself effectively.
