It la hoped As toria'a people will not overlook th tm port an c of th Catherine of th O re gno Pre Association. Thea gentle men represent newspaper published la every section of the state. They are th moulders ot public opinion in their respective localities. An opportunity la prevented In their presenc to set Astoria right on certain questions which Lav been the toplo ot public .. . . ., , discussion for some time past, and upon which there has been a dlsposl-1 Uoa In some quarters to misrepresent th sentiment and aims of our cttlsens. According to the annual report ot Secretary Toiler there are in this stats XH publications entered as second class matter at th several post offices. Of these 160 are weeklies, S3 month lies, M dailies, 4 seml-wevklles and one semi-monthly. He classes them as W republican, tS democratic. It populist on prohibition, 14 religious. It Inde pendent 10 fraternal. 4 agricultural. 1 amateur. 5 college, 7 miscellaneous and 1 poultry. Estimating the state's pop ulation at 400.00 it will be seen that Oregon has a newspaper for every 1S0O people. Perhaps a majority of these Journals la presented by membership In the Oregon Press Association, and through the system of exchanges which p re rails one with another, it is not too much to say that every reader In the state of Oregon and thousands else where can be reached through the medium of this strong organixatlon. It will be a gross dereliction of duty on the part of Astoria's commercial or ganisations and leading cttlsens it these new spaper men do not carry back to their homes and reflect in the col- " conception of th Astoria "proposition" and the concern which should be felt and manifested in its development , trousseau. As an Illustration as to the value of such a meeting In the way of advertising I will state that after Portland was Selected for the 1S9J , meeting I began saving all press clip- I . i a a well person. I am now twenty pings that I could secure if the article1 "? .l,n uT,1?'r.rM referred to the 1899 meeting of the N E. A., and up to August 15. I had saved 5. SCO feet, or over one mile of press ; notices. Putting a low cash estimate upon this matter I consider that It ls reasonably worth J3J.000. And while I am in the best position, perhaps, of ( any one In the National Association to receive these clippings, I am of the opinion that I have received not over I one-sixth of all notices. I think that 1 I am making a fair estimate when X I say this. Therefore, I believe that up i to the present time the Northwest has! received the benefits as a direct re- j suit of this meeting In Portland of ad- vertlsing that is reasonably worth, if given out by an advertising agency, fully 3S,000. And the end is not yet Some of the papers have Just com menced to tell of the trip of their! representatives." THG POLITICAL SITUATION. Judge George W. Allen, of Colorado, now visiting his son, Harrlslon Allen, of this city, says Colorado Is coming back to Its allegiance to the republi can party, and even democrats there are declaring their intention of voting for McKlnley next year. One of the most pronounced McKlnley men In that stae now Is former Governor J. B. Grant, treasurer of the Bryan cam paign fund in UH and a democrat In Montano, too, a vital change Is said to be taking place. Chief among those who now declare for McKlnley against Bryan Is Marcus Daly, without who llnanclal aid th democrat! struggle In 1S9 would have had no significance. There never was a time In the his tory ot the country when labor was In such general demand as It Is today, and as a rule wages ot worklngmen are as high as they hav ever been In the past In ISM democracy cut loos from its mooring, made an appeal to the poverty and cupidity ot the land, and marshaled millions ot votes. To day, on the authority of th Philadel phia Times, on ot th best posted dem ocratic papers In th east, Mr. Bryan couldn't carry a stngje northern state east of th Mississippi river; couldn't carry a state on th Pacific coast; couldn't carry a state between th Mississippi and th Rocky mountains, and he would lose Kentucky, Tennes see and Virginia in the south, with an even chance to lose Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. Th vocation of th cheap money repudiation agitator has passed away, and th country can have no more use for dishonest money parties or candidates in the great bat tle that closes th nineteenth century. Th state of more than normal busi ness prosperity ha brought the peopl of the nation to fully appreciate the sanctity of public and private credit, and hencforth the man who advocates fifty cent dollars that would deprive i labor ot half Its wages; that would cut ! In two the millions of savings of work Intrmen in th savings institutions ot the land; that would demoralise the w hole business interests ot th country ! and deliver Its fiercest retribution up on labor, snd that would degrade this great republic before the civilised na tions ot the world when the seml clvillted are struggling to escape the poverty of silver this man will bav no important vocation In th political conflict of 1900. The idle mendicant the labor agitator, and the cheap money demagogue have had their vo cations ended by the industrial pro perty which started with the election ot McKlnley and which has increased and extended until It is now enjoyed by the people of the entire republic Flj.l I t Wh, inin,t t care and pnde a MkA A JljdJl IU IOC DnTKT Ul lUCU UUIUCa.
