This Is probably the largest rote cast at any one store In the city and shows not only the large business done, but that the patrons of that pop ular store were Interested In the re gatta apd In the selection of a queen to preside over the festivities. The report was circulated yesterday that the Whit el Collar line contem plated a rate of 75 cents for Chinese passengers between Astoria and Port land. The regular steamer rate for deck passage has heretofore been IL The O. R. N. people have not as yet met the reduction, but It Is not Im probable the cut will go long un noticed. Adjutant General B. B. Tut tie ar rived from Portland yesterday on the o'clock express. General Tuttle Is here on a trip of inspection of naval reserves. The division had drill In the cutter yesterday evening and was accompanied In the boat by General Tuttle. The drill was very satisfactory and occupied over an hour. General Tuttle returns to Portland this even ing. At the teacher examination held at the courthouse yesterday the following teachers were granted certificates: Fist grade. C. C. Brower, Miss E. V. Hess; second grade. Miss Harriet I. Dunning: third grade. Miss Nellie Gerdlng. and Miss Myrtle V. Bllnn. The examination commenced Wednes day morning and there were seven applicants In all. The board of exam iners adjourned Anally yesterday even ing. Next Saturday and Sunday evenings the Georgia's up-to-date minstrels will aooear at Fisher's opera house In two hours of solid fun. Thompson, died last night at 11:30, on board the steamer. The man was taken sick yesterday shortly after the Thompson left Portland. The physi cian In attendance made no statement as to the cause of his death. But lit tle is known of hlra by his associates on board the boat, further than that he had been employed at one time on the steamship Columbia. The body was taken in charge by Coroner Pohl. The delivery wagon of the Foard A Stokes Company ran Into Foster's ex press wsgon at the corner of Ninth and Commercial yesterday. The de livery wagon was going at a furious rate at the time and Its shaft was Jammed through the wheel of the ex press, and broken oft. The driver of the delivery wagon narrowly escaped from injury, having got entangeled In the lines. Fortunately the horses stop- -ped and gave him time to clear him self. Outside of the broken shaft the Injuries to both wagons were slight. The big log raft, which has been un der construction at Stella for some time, arrived down the river yesterday evening in tow of the R. R. Thompson and the tug Wallula. The raft Is about 800 feet long and contains be tween four and five million feet of timber. It was constructed by the Robertson Raft Company and Is made up principally of piling. It was taken to Flavel and moored. The togs Res cue and Relief are on their way from San Francisco and will meet the raft off the Columbia and tow it to the Tat ter port The Wallula will probably tow It to sea today. Lieuetnant Bherman, senior grade, was yesterday elected lieutenant com mander of the Oregon naval batalllon, vice W. H. Lewis, resigned. Lieuten ant Sherman Is regarded as a very competent officer and the efficiency of the local division under hit Instruc tion has always been the subject of much favorable comment. At the or ganisation of the second division, In this city, Lieutenant Sherman was chosen Its commander. He Is popular alike with the men and officers of the division and recerreil many congratu lations yesterday on his promotion. The second division will probably elect a successor to Lieutenant Commander Sherman at Its meeting Wednesday night tt Deputy Fish Commissioner Clark Lausherv patrolled the river in the launch Elf after 11 o'clock FrltMty night. He arrested two fishermen who were drifting on the river. There li cense number's were 1101 and 511. and both belonged to Washington. About 30 (lull were found In their nets. The salmon were sold yesterday by Fish Commissioner Reed to the local mark eta The fishermen were locked up In the county Jail and were afterwards taken before Justice Hughea They gave the names of Thedore Ksllm and Jacob Halmhllla. Bonds of J 100 eac were furnished by George H. George tnd Wm. H. Barker. Their trial Is set for Monday at 1 o'clock. In the police court yesterday John Gustafson, and a man giving the name of John Doe, each forfeited 15 for be ing drunk. John Lakl was arraigned on the charge of being drunk and dls orderly. Lakl appeared with two badly battered eyes, and, according to Police Officer Stark, who was the ar resting officer, had been in a fight Just before his arrest Lakl was lined 13. S. A ho was charged with Interfer'ug with an officer while In the discharge of his duties. The offense was com roitted during the arrest of Lakl. A ho, who Is a Russian Finn, spoke through an Interpreter and would not plead. He swooned In the courtroom, after speaking a few words. Officer Stark said the man was all right but had been drinking heavily. Judge Nelson took a humane view of the case and postponed hearing until Mouday to de termine whether Aho should be sent to the hospital or tried for his offense. John Lisvig was fined t5 for being drunk. Deputy Fish Commissioner Keegan arrested five seiners yesterday morn lng, who he found Ashing contrary t' the law governing the close seusn The names of the men arrested are Nicholas Kerage, Tom Taylor, Tom Spencer, Frank Cook and Chris Henry, They were arraigned before Justice Hughes In the afternoon and fined JiO each, which they paid. The Miller sands seining people, who were also fishing, made their escape before they could be taken by the flan commla sioner. As it is now apparent that the law will be strictly enforced, It Is prob- able all the seiners as well as the gillnetters will suspend operations un til, the fall season opens. There Is plenty fish In the river and the seln ers can all catch from two to four ton a day. One of the arrested seiners yes terday said the fine for the second of rense was too heavy, and that as soon as he had reached his seinlsg grounds uo the river he would put away his gear for the season. The county court had a busy session yesterday and several county improve. ments were acted upon. The super visor of road district No. 10 was in structed to build the fourth bridge from the Knappa dock to the county road. F. M. Warren, in a communt cation. Informed the court that In var ious localities In road district No. 1 large quantities of thistles were grow ing. The supervisor of the district was Instructed to Investigate the mat ter. A communication was read from S. A. Adair to the effect that unless the court took come action In regard to the two roads running through his property, he would be compelled to close them. The communication was laid over for further consideration. A report was read from the supervisor of district No. 1 giving the amount of lumber taken from bis district for the building of the bridge across the Adair slough. iA petition was read from Assessor Carnahan for further time In completing the assessment roll. The court extended the time for the assess ment until September 25 and the time for returning the same until Monday, October 2. SENSIBLE TALK TO ASTORIA PEOPLE. This was an Increase of 3S.301 The total vote of the three leading aspirants aggregittea a grand total of 255.01. The result Is stupen dous. It would seem a pity that three queens rather than one might not sub serve the pleasing duties of sovereign ty on the carnival occasion, tor one and all have hosts of admirers, and each Is a symbol of rare grace and charming manner. The total receipts realised from the voting contest were announced as 1673.00. A NEW DEPARTURE. The New Hotel At Mayger Opened With Appropriate Ceremonies. j When the A. A C. passenger train pulled Into Mayger yesterday. It was met at the platform by twenty-five sturdy little fellows, all drawn up In martial array, and accoutered In the latest of Dewey uniforms. There fol lowed a moment of conventional sil ence, during which the pygmlan sol diers saluted with all the pomp of military exactness. Then came an outburst of screeching and screaming. The wurds "Hotel de Bluhrer" were now and then discernable, ulthough the hubbub was much too riotous to admit of any logical comprehension of the event. William Sluhrer In person was a visitor In the city last evening, and to hltn the reporter la Indebted for the particulars of the occurrence. "I have Just finished a hotel at Mayger," said Mr. Sluhrer, "and I am adopting an Innovation as to the manner of properly advertising It. A day or two ago I took a run to Portland, and ob serving the volunteers. It occurred to me that I would awaken an enthus iasm In my ow n home by a unique and striking departure. Therefore, I set to work and selected twenty-five juvenile suits, of a light blue texture and an abundance of red trimming. I also bought the same number of reg ulatlon service caps. Each of the caps Is emblazened with -the word "Dewey." I took the equipment home and the re. suit as you are aware has found cog nisance abroad. "The hotel," continued Mr. Bluher, 'has already cost me above $5,000. can give you an idea of its dimensions by stating that a guest may sleep as high as the fifth story. I have decided upon September l&th as the date for a formal dedication. There will be a liberal delegation from Portland pres ent, and I hope the larger part of As torla's people will be there also.
