The Oregonlan regrets that It seems to have been Imposed upon la its As toria dispatch of yesterday morning concerning the salmon pack of the season Just closed. It hopes to have trustworthy figure to give out in day or two. Meanwhile, the statement that salmon now in the river cannot reach the dalles for thirty days, and then only in a deteriorated condition. Is sufficiently preposterous to deceive no one. Yesterday's Oregonlan. If reference is here made to the es timate af the salmon pack sent out by the Associated press, and printed ir. both that paper and the AslorUn Fri day morning, the Oregonlan Is In formed that it was not Imposed on and Its charge Involves a grave injustice to the painstaking man who prepared that estimate. It is to be presumed that the Oregonlan seeks only the truth and would not wilfully publish any thing else relating to the important matter of the salmon output. Yet here ja an opportunity presented some ma licious or Incompetent person to so Ira pose upon It, and the way plainly pointed out, by furnishing that paper with pretended data on the salmon pack which will tend to discredit the statement It haa already published. The estimate In Question of course, It was only an estimate, since tew can nerymen care to have the exact figures as to their pack published and almost invariably refuse to make any state mentwas furnished the Associated Press by a competent man in a posi tion to keep the run of the pack, but who is wholly disconnected from the fishing industry and can have no bias for or against any canneryman or group ot cannerymen engaged in the busi ness. The estimate is based upon the 1-pound can standard of case meas urement, the accepted rule among all cannerymen, and the one under which - they pay their labor and contract for supplies and material. In the Interest of the" truth, and for the sake of pre serving reliable statistics for future comparison, it is hoped the Oregonlan will now make a fair and thorough In vestigation of the question, and that It will have the honor to take back Its unjust aspersions on the Associated Press agent who sent out the original statement. As to whether It Is Judicious to ap point a close season of but one month's duration at this time of the year, in the light of what is known of the sal mon's habits, the Astortan readily ad mit is a question which grounds up-, on a decided difference of opinion be tween the upper and lower river can nerymen. In Astoria the opinion Is unanimous that the lapse of thirty days between August 10 and Septem ber It not only tends In no way to pre serve the Industry, but Is a positive detriment to the reputation of the Co lumbia river salmon. The Oregonlan must know such is the view of a large majority of the men engaged in the business and it must be also familiar with the reasons why they hold this opinion. Now it Is not only natural that any citizen of Astoria, newspaper correspondent or otherwise, should stand with his section of the river on this controverted question, but It Is Just aa unnatural that the Oregonlan, which belongs no more to the upper than the lower river fishing regions, should be partial to either side of the contention. It Is or It is not a fact that the fine run of Chinook sal mon which had Just entered the river at the close of the season will be oc cupied for a month or more In making their way to the head waters. Cer tainly this is a matter for dispassionate examination ' and Judgment and It U entitled to that kind of treat- mnt In th columns ot tho Oregonlan. Fishermen who havo followed tho river aH tholr rives positively assert that the llsh now in the lower river will only reach the vicinity of the flshwheels and other up-river appliances In time to be caught In countless number af ter the 10th day ot September, the opening date of the fall season. It they are not to be permitted to reach the (pawning grounds, how much bet ter It would be for the whole Industry It they were caught and canned right fresh from the tea, as close to the mouth ot the river aa possible. Who can deny the sense ot this proposition, or that, after spending thirty days in fresh water, the condition of these fine fish will have deteriorated? Does the Oregonlan consider these fish, af- Ver they have reached and been thrown out by the wheels ot the upper river, fit to be sold In competition with sal mon caught on the Columbia river bar and canned within a few hours after being taken out of salt water? We believe the Oregonlan knows better, and' It Is neither fair nor honest for the Oregonlan to call the suggestion of such facta "preposterous," The Mestw Key.
