R. N. Company, but we believe every merchant In Astoria owes it to hla own fireside at thla juncture to t.gn a solemn compact to accept no freight consigned to him over any other than the Astoria A Columbia River Railroad." Ia terms this Include th OR. P. S. X. line. It was not so Intended. The Telephone steamer deserves the most liberal patronage of our people. Its own. en re amoog th best friends Astoria ever had. At all times and under all circumstances they have stood our friends. They should be patronised with enthusiasm. The Telephone people re. fused to join the O. R.- ft N. Company In its stiameful effort to ruin Astoria merchants. Tbe rates of the C. R. P. & N. Company are still 12.50 for round trip. An Interesting question will arise, too, on that unusual situation. At least half the tickets sold at 11.80 by the JJohler line are used on the Telephone, dnder an agreement by which they are redeemable by the O. R. & N. company. When the division comes to be made It will be found that th O. R. N. will have to pay the Telephone rates, which will leave them only 11.10 for a round trip. This Is exactly as It ought to be. It wIM be another case of the biter get ting bitten. The Kind You Have Always Bought In Use For Over 30 Years. VMt tftVua MVHNT, TT WIM THCT. NCWTOHM tTT. this combination is enabled by reason ot these appropriations to exact over At a woman's luncheon there Is gen. erally one indlvldnal who apparently re. rants It as h-r particular duty to en. tl.0KI.0i) more money In freight tariffs deavor to entertalu the res,t of the table from Inland producers than Is a reason- ! by a recital of happenings In which they I take no possible Interest. able compensation for the transportation of the wheat of Oregon and Washington. I and that besides its extortion ot this ' The Salem Statesman cannot aid the Taqulna bay Improvement by standing In with Portland on the 25-foot channel chimera. Portland no more wants Ta qulna' bay Improved than she Is willing to have Astoria become the seaport of the Columbian basin. The Statesman probably believes that the government's expenditure of a quarter of a million of dollars this year In dredging; tut the Co lumbia river between Astoria and Port. land will benefit the Irrtand producer. This is a fatal error. It Is a pity that a paper of the sense and influence of the Statesman can be fooled that way. There could be no more flagrant misuse of pub. lie funds than these appropriations for Increasing the so-called ship channel to Portland. Instead of helping the inland producer, they operate to depreciate the market for his wheat more than 12.50 a ton, and enable the railroad and wheat speculators' pool of Portland to pocket that difference out of the producer's earnings. This Is no idle assertion. If the Statesman doubts It, let that paper reproduce this charge from the Astorian and offer us Its columns to prove It. The Astorian can show that Portland practl. cally monopolizes Oregon's share of the federal appropriations for rivers and harbors, and that the immense sums so obtained not only enter no permanent 1m. provements which might tend In the long run to benefit the people of Portland, but hey are entirely squandered In dredging operations on the bars of the Columbia river which have to te repeated after each annual freshet. We further change that through these appropriations a great and iniquitous railroad combination is perpetuated in the northwest, contrary to the public Interest. That this rail.1 road combination would be impossible but for these federal appropriations. That extra fretSht money, the members ot the railroad combination share directly and Indirectly In an immense wheat pool or. iganiaed and maintained by the wheat buyers of Puget sound and Portland, all of which nefarious operations depend solely for their success upon the govern, ment appropriations to open the sand bars between the railroad terminals at th Columbia river Jetty and the Interior point of Portland. The Astorian con. tends, la other words, that a public eneay is abroad In Oregon and Washing, ton and Is engaged in looting and devas tating the product ot th toil of thou, sand ot American cltisens, and that this enemy Is enabled to carry on It schema of plunder only through the support of federal appropriations. Now. the States man will admit. If these assertions are true, it is the duty of every Independ ent paper In the northwest to unite in breaking up this organised raid upon the public treasury. The Oregonian ignores these charges, although that paper knows the truth of them as well as we do. That paper has been challenged again and again to publish these charges and give the Astorian space to prove tbem. It refuses utterly to do so, and seeks to suppress the circulation of the charge and discredit our efforts to bring them to public attention by saying they are In. spired by town.lot boomers at Astoria. We ask the Statesman for fairer treat, ment. If there Is no truth in what we have asserted, let the Statesman put us to the test upon It. If our assertions are true, they demand public attention, and every newspaper of good standing In Oregon should aid in their dissemination. We await an expression from the States man on the subject. One of the most hor rible things about the nervous diseases to which women are peculiarly subject is the sense of overwhelming; desoair which they briiijr upon the mind. A woman s me::tal condition is airectly and powerful! v affected by any ailnv-nt of the delicate, special organs of her sex. Such a difficulty not only racks her body with pain and suf fering but burdens her with mental anguish which words can hardly describe. Thousands of women have had a similar experience to that of Mrs. Kurath A.
