Fish Commissioner McGuIre Asks the Legislature to Appropriate (2.000 Annually for This Cause. Fish Commissioner McGuIre In his an nual report, asks the legislature for an appropriation of 12,0X1 a year for the purpose of artificial propagation. Th following excerpt from the report dem onstrates the great results obtainable from propagation, and argues strongly why tho state should foster the great In dustry: I want to call attention to the work of the United States Clackamas hatchery for the four years, from 1& to li'j3. In clusive. During these years there were 13,100,000 fry planted (the eggs being taken In the fall of the preceding year), or an average of 3,275,000 for the four years, the bent work ever accomplished by tho hatchery up to that time. Note the effect on the quantity of salmon after that (al lowlr.g them time to mature before re turning to spawn): Cases. 617,000 4i;:U'i0 to, 'Ml In 1304 In 1K5 In In 1K7 Total 2,123,400 Yearly average 630,775 In the preceding four years, from 1&6 to lW-, Inclusive, the total output of the hitehery amounted to only (S.OW.OOO fry, and the aggregate pack of the canneries for the corresponding years, lfcOI, Viil and l&M, when they xhould have rt turned to spawn, amounted to 1,718,745 cane tor the four years, and a yearly average of 429,086 canes, or a difference of over 100,000 cases por annum, amounting In value to over $r,40,000, or nearly 12 for every man, woman and child In Oregon. The hatchery was not operated during the years 13 and 1894, and no fry were planted In the years 1S94 and 193, which resulted in a great diminution In tho abundance of salmon and a decreased pack for the year 1808.
