The sequel to a strange sea story de
veloped yesterday. A few days ago the
schooner Rio Ray. bound from San Fran
cisco to Sluslaw. and which lay off that
bar twenty days unable to get Into har
h,ir t.r!iitut of rough weather, came into
this port in distress, short of proviMon.
The captain reported that In a i;ale a
few days before he had spoken a canoe
loaded with Indians. They could not
speak English but made known that they
were hungry. Out of his own poor stores
he gave them water and crackers. They
refused all Invitations to come aboard
the schooner, though It seemed every mo
ment their frail craft would be swamped
In the storm. They had one seal in the
canoe. What they could do on the open
ocean In such weather, or where they
came from was a mystery. It now tran
spires that the stalwart buck Indtans
and two or three squaws who have been
In the city for a day or two are off the
British sealing schooner Hatslc. which
arrived here in distress, and constitute
her fishing crew, and are only a few of
hundreds of Indians on fifty or more
sealers now lining this const. The men
are very daring and the crew seen by the
Rio Ray drifted many miles from their
vessel In a storm but reached it attain
In safety after a perilous experience.

Tuttle, A. h. Kultoii, and J. fcl. lilshop

of such surifli al cases. Dr. lilshop slate'l
that he made a specialty of obvtctiics,
and recounted the circumstances of bis

Mr. Samuel Elmore, who has Just re
turned from a visit of some weeks east,
as questioned yesterday by an Astorlan
lepresentatlve regarding the outlook for
canned salmon this season. Mr. Elmore
said:
"As Is well known I was called away
by the death of my aged father at Mil
waukee, and matters connected with that
sad event pretty much engrossed my en
tire attention while away. From my ob
servations and the correspondence which
rwichcd me while there, however. I am
Mllsncd that choice Columbia river sal
mon will command at least as good a
price this seison as last. The f u t It the
enormous output of cheap salmon In the
piist few years ho proved something of
a blessing In disguise. Consumer of sal-1
ir.on have had an opportunity to compare j
the genuine Columbia river article with j
the cheap and low grade of llsh pachel
at outside points.
"The Inevitable result of this course ;
of education, with the return of good
times, will be that we shall have an In- J
creased demand for the best quality of
Columbia river goods. Indeed, it Is no ;
secret that stocks of nally choice Col-!

. . . . .. .i .h
I look for an importnnt revival of the
Columbia river canning industry. Mil It
must be upon a stronger base of prices
Nith for the raw and finished product
than has prevailed for several years. ,
"An Important factor In this year's
prices will be the abnormal condition of
the river. Thre Is a marked absence of

river country, and It Is absoluetly cer
