She will be ready to leave for her destination about the end of next week. It Is thought by those Interested that the A. P. C. A. will take up at once the matter of securing a government harbor boat for this port. No other seaport of the size and Importance of Astoria Is without one, and the dally experiences here show con clusively Ihe necessity for one. The ix-rfect weather makes prepress on the railroad very satisfactory und the line Is now within two miles of west port. With a few weeks' more runshlne the road will be completed, and the dele gates to the republican state convention can ride to Astoria on the cars. Northern Pacific railroad trains leave Portland dally at 11 o'clock a. m. for Ta coma, Bpokane, and the east. At an early hour yesterday morning Samuel Davidson, a longshoreman, took an Involuntary bath In the chilly waters of the Columbia. He fell from the road way opposite the Columbia Iron Works and his cries for help attracted the at tent ion of Officer Thompson, who fished him out. The officer asked J. K. Hill owner of a scow moored near by. for the use of his skiff to assist Davidson, but the owner, whose heart, Is no doubt wood en, refused point blank. Davidson was not drowned, but he would have been had Hill's humanity been depended upon. In view of the uneasiness felt in this city over the possible Introduction of an epidemic of cerebro spinal meningitis from Skagway on returning Alaska steamers. Dr. Aug. C. Kinney was in duced by a number of friends yesterday to communicate with the celebrated bac teriologist D. Edwirt Klebs, professor of pathology In the Rush Medical College. on the subject Dr. Kinney wired the fol lowing question: "Is epidemic cerebro spinal meningitis communicable? Should It be isolated? What steps should be tak en to prevent Its spread?" The answer was as follows: "Very communicable. O. Howell, on the ground that the bond under which he was Indicted by the grand Jury was Insuffici ent When District Attorney Cleeton was seen by an Astorian reporter regarding the Issuance of the warrant he expressed surprise that the matter had been made public and at first refused to believe that It had been published. He admitted that such a motion had been filed but dis claimed any knowledge of when or how Judge McBride would act upon the ques tion of Issuing such a warrant. At a meeting of the directors of the As toria Football Club. Thursday night, a letter was read from W. L. Robb, of Nort h Pacific Association of Amateur Oarsmen, In which he set forth the suggestion that the A. F. C. take up with the sport and become a member of the organisation. Mr. Bobb expressed the opinion that the annual regatta . of the N. P. A. A. O. would be held here this year were the effort made. Secretary Gunn was Instruct ed to take steps to ascertain the manner of joining the association and to write for particulars of the regatta. It la quite probable that the A. F. C. will become a member and that the '98 regatta will be held here, at the time of the Astoria an nual carnival. Two squaws and about ten Indian bucks came ashore from the schooner Hetxlc yesterday and a few moment's later a customs official was watching their movements. It appears the Indians brought a quantity of mats ashore and disposed of them. The mats were made In British Columbia nnd were consequently dutiable. Before the customs officials learned of the fact that the Indians were ashore, they had sold or bartered all their goods. The Indians strolled about the city until Inspector Crosby rounded them up and notified the captain to take them aboard. Of course. It was Impossible for the officials to cause the arrest of the Indians, as It could not be ascertained whether they sold the mats or had given them away. At the A. The Clams, a strong team, lost two games to the Tomcod, the scores being 1G2 to m and 1MI to lit. Mrs. In- galls made the best score In the tourna ment for the ladles, getting 41. C. It. WVRTH'8 OPINION. 0( th New Discovery In Medicine. A nemarkably Successful Remedy for Dyspepsia, Indigestion and 8tomach Troubles. Dr. Wurth, In commenting on recent dis coveries In medicine, said: There isnons which Is certain to be so valuable snd far reaching tn benefit as Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets, the new stomach remedy; I say , far reaching, because people little realise how Important n sound stomach and vlg- j orous digestion Is to every man, woman and child. I Indigestion Is the starting point of con-1 sumption, heart disease, Brlght's dlseass. diabetes, nervous prontrstlon, liver troub- 1 les; why Is this so? Simply becsuse every ! nerve, muscle and tissue In our bodies Is created and nourished from the food we j eat If thst food Is. by reason of a weak stomach, rompelled to lie for hours, a sour, fermenting mass of half digested j food, It poisons the blood and nervous . system, creates gas which distends ths , stomach and bowels, causing pressure on the heart, lungs and other organs and seriously impeding their action. Ha says further, the point to direct at- -tentlon Is not the nerves, nor heart, nor ' lungs nor kidneys, but the stomach, ths ' first cause of all th. mischief. The remedy to use for Indigestion and weak stomachs Is not some cathartic, but ' a remedy which will digest th. food, In-! crease the flow of gastric Jules, absorb th. gasses, and Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets will accomplish exactly this result in any 1 rase of stomach trouble, because these , tablets are composed of the dlgastlv. acids, aseptic pepsin, Ooldcn Seal snd , Bismuth, pleasant to taste, and not being a patent medicine, can be used by any 0110 with perfect safety. I believe Btu- , art's Dyspepsia Tablets will cure any form of Indigestion and stomach trouble except cancer of stomach. Full size packages of Stuart's Dyspep sia Tablets aro sold by drugglBts at M cents. A book on stomach diseases to gether with thousands of testimonials will bo sent by addressing Stuart Com pany.
