The farmers of the United State er enjoying prosperity this year, especially In the Great West, where they have suf fered most Bine the panic of ISSi Not only did they share the hard timet and stagnation of business In common with ail other classes of the comumnlty, but the world was producing more grain thaa It needed, and prices were consequently too low to render their operations profit able to any large extent. This year, how. eer, the American farm?rs are favored by the combination of a shortage. In the wheat crop of Europe and of those coi n. tries which compete with us in wheat cspom, with a home crop enormous In yield and magnificent in quality. The managers of the Western railroad lines all expect a year of prosperity. The wheat crop Is larger than ever before grown In the West, with the exception of cne year only. Already the roids are anxious because of a shortage of cars wherewith lo transport this ir-mendous , ll0n with Hostettt.r-s stomach Bitters, crop to market. Tho corn arsa is the the finest, the most highly sanct'oned. lanwit ver known: tho hav croo Island the most popular tonic and preven Immense throughout tha grazing sec tions, and the live stock raisers are Jubi lant In consequence. The crop of oats Is above the average; rye, barley and potatoes promise equally well. Every thing Is coming the farmer's way in tliis favored year. The Increase in the value of wheat, corn and oats, and cf hegs, cattle and sheep, thU year In the ted grazing sec-!""7 entire West Is conservatively estimated j at 1350.000. . In other wtv.H the farm. . aMgn ag cauM Q, ers of the West today are wealthier than h0S agonizing complaints, rheumatism they were a year ago by a sum equal (and gout, and It is, moreover, an excel to half the enUre bonded debt of theism rera-dy for an enfeebled and oer- United States. This Is a bad year for the calamity howlers. They have in the past made the farmers their especial vie- j tims. But the great agricultural states are more prosperous this yeir than for half a decade. Men who are making money are not listening to the walls of political destructives, nor will they sup port measures which would, if carried into effect, deal a deadly blow to their new-born prosperity. The free sil-er craze Is pas-slnp, and the democratic party Is once more on the toboggan leading to a gesieral smash-up. The recent shipment of American tin plate to Paly is another lesson to the American people on the folly and ma. lignlty of the leaders of the dmoctatlc party. It will be remembered that during the second Cleveland campaign, such statesmen as Mills, of Texas, and Vest, of Missouri, repeatedly stated that tin plate could not be produced in this coun try. Vest was particularly emphatic In such assertions, notwithstanding at that very time preparations were going on in his own city of St. Louis for the es. tablishment of the pion'tr tin plate fac tory In the United States. Now, under the start given by the McKinloy tariff, we are not only making the bulk of the tin plate consumed in this country at leit east of the Rocky Mountains but our manufacturers are actually in vading foreign markets. What was true of the tin plate Industry', under the Mc Kinloy tariff, will be repeated In beet sugar, under the Dlngley tariff. And yet, it Is to be presumed. Intelligent peo ple can still lie found who will pretend to dejny the benefits of a protective tariff, and who will go on voting the democratic ticket simply because Lee was forced to surrender at Appomattox, or their grand fathers voted for Andrew Jackson. Some of the American people are tlrm to accept the solid lessons of fundamental political economy, but when they go to school they assimilate knowledge virth great rapidity. They are "studying this free silver question" In two ohject lessoi-.s of unmistakable significance. One Is the advance of wheat while silver goes on falling. This corrects with a club the favorite . falsehood of the screechers of tha Silver Trust. The rise in wheat, tobacco and cotton, regardless of silver or of state banks, or any sort of cur. rency reforms, tolls the story that the farmers can got money if th.y have the markets It Is, thorvfuiv. a polly that makes markets that we want; and It Is bettor to get Rood money for crops Uixii poor stuff that dv-prvclaus or parishes In tho hands of those who have earned It. As President MoKlnUy put Is: "It is Ivtter to oit the mills thn the mints." Object lesson number one from the flcl.ls Is that there Is good money for the prod, ucts of lntelllginc and thrifty agricul. turat Industry; and when the f:irnrrs have a moxl supply of go.t money It U apt to circulate. Right akwiu with this comes the gold news from the Yukon, and other parts of the world, showing that the earth Is richer in gold th.iu any on) believed, until wlthitt a few years; th,.t there Is enough for all nations to establish the irol.l standarl and be as sured of a sufficiency. The object lessjn itum!r i wo In the current history Is that gold Is the money of tho people, always good and never ohoals. and that an abundance of it, and not an artificial val uation of something cheuiwr, is on the stvle of enlightened ami pelf.rospeatlng lahor. The last call for statements of national honk his shown the finance of the commercial world in splendid condition for Just such an occasion as the present. Already Inquiries for discounts for com. mercial paper are becoming more numer ous than at any time since the panic of 1S& Business men, manufacturers and merchants have awakenett to a renliitu Hon of the opportunities of the hour, while money Is so cheap and the cer tainty of an enormous domand for man. ufactured goods In the near future be yond question. Stock markets havs re flected this confidence in a manner that has been costly as It has been punll ig to veterans of the Stock Exchange, who locked for a reaction after the recent advance. Agalr.st such a reaction the confidence of investors offers an insur. mountable barrier.
