Last year's output of American built and teglsered vessels wan the greatest known In the last fourteen years, with two exceptions. One of the best evidences that the new tariff law wlM benefit Americans at the expense of foreign producers who have been fattening on our mar kets, is found in the consternation P re-Tailing- In Germany over the prospect of the early passage of the Dingley MIL The extent to which public feel ing Is aroused on the subject is shown by the cabling and publication of the cntl erttofebx iehtfthatshrdlu srhdlrdl entire text of the bill in prominent papers. Such a feat was never under taken by European Journals la any matter of American news before. Those who cavil at the benefits to be derived from the control of our own markets can draw some useful lessons from the alarm thus manifested by outsiders at the prospect of losing them. It Is most satisfactory to the onlooker, as well as to the citixens and property owners of Astoria, to see the prompt ness with which the city council Is meeting the railroad company in the movement for the development and establishment of future business in this never .had any as a whole, having been disowned by Its author, and becoming a law without the signature of a dem oeratlc president. In view of the hesitation of tholr party to adopt a policy of free trade when It had a chance, and of the lamentable results of the present tariff. It Is not strange that demxratio edi tors generally ex press a desire not to obstruct the passage of a protective law by the republicans, as outlined in the St. Louis platform. While these democratic Journals are opposed to a hlch protective tntiff, they are evident ly of the opinion that the republican? can not do less than pass such a Mil as Is demanded by their distinct agree ment with the people. Some gv fur ther than this. The llrooklyn Kule. after advising the passage of a t.irif.' act, furnishing ample revenue for the running expense of the governmnt. re marks: " It is our own belief that the Intelligence of democracy is relinnubh imr much of Its old-time animosity toward the protectionist school. and that it will continue to relinqu'sh it to the extent that the degradation and uebasement of labor conditions abroad are .the more understood and appre ciated." In other words, Ameii.au wages must be maintained by a pro tective policy. It Is sound republican doctrine. As a line of political action, free trade is Ii decadence the world over. With out the support of England there .vou'J hardly be enough of it left to be worth an inventory, and there is a growing sentiment against it In that country. based partly on the recent Invasion of Its markets by the manufactured goods of protectionist countries. But no nation has quite as many reasons for protection as the United States. Our wage-workers are accustomed to better pa" than can be obtained In Europe, and to a higher standard of living. It seems that some of the dem ocratic jiapers concede that this point rests upon the application of the prin ciple of protection, and they are ready to approve its embodiment in th? new tariff. It is a long step in the right direction, and in time will naturally lead to an admission that the develop ment of our American Industries is well worth looking after in a reason able way. There is no let up to the mental suffering day or night. Sleep is almost impossible, and under such a strain men are scarcely respon sible for what they do. For years the writer rolled and tossed on the troubled sea of sexual weakness until It was a question whether be had not better take a dose of poison and thus end all his troubles. But providential inspira tion came to his aid in the shape of a combination of medicines that not only completely restored the general health. but enlarged his weak, emaciated parts to natural siie and vigor, and he now declares that any man who will take the trouble to send his name and ad dress may have the method of this won derful treatment free. Now when 1 say free I mean absolutely without cost. because I want every weakened man to get the benefit of my experience. I am not a philanthropist, nor do I pose as an enthusiast, but there are thousands of men suffering the mental tortures of weakened manhood who would be cured at ones could they but get such a remedy as the one that cured me.
