Astoria, Or., October 15. IKS. The Chamber of Commerce has held another meeting and adopted a strong memorial to congress on the subject of an appropriation of some millions of dollars to help propagate salmon for the Oregon canners. This U a wise move, and one worthy of all encouragement It seems, however, that the Chamber, doubtless through the stress of other important business, omitted to take any steps to acquaint the postal authorities with the fact that Astoria today pre sents the strange and anomalous dis tinction ot a town with, ten thousand inhabitants, enjoying all other modern advantages. Including the inestimable possession of a live and progressive Chamber of Commerce, without the benefit of a daily mail service. We also fail to find anything In the record of last night's proceedings, concerning the establishment of range lights at the entrance of the greatest seaboard har bor oa the Pacific coast. These Import ant matters, no doubt. Including the public market and several questions of lesser consequence, will receive due and proper consideration at some future meeting of the Chamber. The talk of a currency commission, which was heard a good deal last yea, is being renewed. It may be remember ed that at the last session of congress Representative Heatwole, ot Minnesota, introduced a resolution providing for a non-partisan currency commission. By Us terms the president was to appoint nine citlxens. eminent in trade, political economy and banking, to act with the comptroller of the currency as a com mission of experts to offer recommenda tions for needed changes in our present inadequate banking and currency sys tem and to report its recommendations to congress. This resolution, it is now said, may be pressed during the coming session of congress, and especially in view of the fact that considerable dis cussion has been engendered as to cur rency legislation in the next congress. It is known that the banking and cur rency committee of the house, to whom the) Heatwole resolution was referred, was not favorably impressed with It, because the committee believed Itself competent to evolve a satisfactory cur rency scheme. As nothing was accom plished In the last session, it Is now possible that a currency commission may be looked upon with favor, espe cially as the prospect of definite finan cial legislation Is somewhat remote. It might as well be understood, however, that the commission should start with the assumption that there Is to be no further compromise on the question of a monetary standard. Another of the myths of the recent campaign has been thoroughly exploded by Secretary Morton's report. Popocrat Ic orators and journals never wearied sf recounting the hardships of the mort gageburdened farmers, and the natural Sect of this doleful oratory was to cre ate the Impression that the farmers were all In debt and being pushed to the wall by the money-lending gold bugs. The plain tale which Secretary Morton, furnishes to put down this mortgage fiction Is that seventy-two per cent, or nearly three-fourths of the farms of the country, are not mortgaged at all, and three-fourths of the actual mortgages were given for the purchase of new farms or to improve farm prop erty already owned. In other words, the bulk of the mortgage Indebtedness represents purchase money and not a deficient return from the operation of the farms. With this showing the debt burdened, toiling farmers will hardly furnish an issue in another campaign. This myth, now exploded, cannot be re vived successfully four years hence, and the Popocratlc leaders will need to in vent a new grievance against the ex isting order of things. It may be re marked in passing that Secretary Mor ton has also furnished in these figures a complete refutation of the Issue which contributed most to put Mr. Cleveland in power, and incidentally to make himself secretary of agriculture. Four years ago it was the Democrats of the stripe to which Secretary Morton belongs, who drew these lugubrious pictures of the mortgage-oppressed condition of the farming classes, who, it was alleged, had been driven to the expedient of mortgaging their farms In order to sup ply their families with the high-priced necessities produced by the protected manufacturer. Secretary Morton's con version to the view the Republicans took at that time ot this good old lVm ooratlc. argument Is another example nl the truth of the old saying that the question of whose ox Is being sroreil sometimes makes a great difference In funning one's opinion. THK JEWISH WOMKN. The National Council of Jewish Worn en Is an organisation which has Just held Us first annual convention In New York City. It Is not very lartre body but It hopes to bring all Intelligent Jewish women Into its fold, to work for the promotion of rellxlon, and the study And practice of philanthropy. I'nder the first head, the method proposed Is the study of Jewish history and the re vival of interest in the observant-, of the ancient faith. The work In phllan thropy will be along the lines of the moral and Intellectual uplifting of the raco in this country. It will be noted that the objects and work are essentially modern In scope. There Is no reference to the dream of Jewish unity by a restoration of the monirchy, with Jerusalem as Its seat and the gathering of the chosen people again within the boundaries of their old heritage in Judea. If the women who are at the head of this movement indulge In that millennial dream, they have had the wisdom to say nothing of It. They propose to deal with exist ing conditions, rather than attempt to start an emotional propaganda over an Impractical vision. The gathering of the Jews scattered over the world in Palestine under their own government. Is chimerical. They would have to turn themselves Into an agricultural and pastoral people, which they are not. They are almost without exception, business men. There would not be any scope, at least for American Jews, In Palestine; nor do the men of this intensely practical race entertain. as a rule, any desire to expatriate them selves in order to attempt the rebuilding of Jewish nationality In Its ancient seat They are perfectly satisfied where they are. IF WE OXLY COCLD. When the price of coal carouses. How we all might scorn Its larks. Could we only heat our houses By the warmth of our remarks. Washington Star. The man with a weight on his leg can't hope to win in the race. A man with a weight on his health can't ex pect to compete In life and business with those who are not handicapped. If his brain is heavy, and his blood slug gish, because ot constipation, he will not succeed in doing anything very well. Constipation is the cause of nine tenths ot all sickness. Symptoms of it are sallowness, listleesness, poor appe tite, bad taste in the mouth, dixxlness, biliousness, and lassitude. Constipa tion can be cured easily and certainly by the use of Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pel lets. They are not at all violent In their action, and yet they are more certain than many medicines which are so strong that they put the system all out of order. The great advantage of the "Pleasant Pellets" Is that they cure permanently.
