Astoria, Dr., October 13, ISO. Hammond will build the Nicaragua Canal. The successful floating of the British ship Zinlta oft the shore near Hoquiam yesterday afternoon. Is another strik ing example of the pluck and persever- ance of the Scotchman. Captain Burns is deserving of the greatest credit for bis good work, and he will no doubt be as successful with the Glenmorag at Ocean Park. The patriotic Republicans of Clatsop will be well represented tonight at the banquet In Portland, to be given in honor of the Hon. Sol Hirsch. chair man of the Republican state committee. It was meet and fit that Clatsop county, in view of Is overwhelming majority for McKlnley, should assist In rendering the honor due to the able general who carried the victory In Oregon. As it Is not probable that partisan legislation can be had In the early part of the next session of congress, now Is the time of all times to push the Nl carauga Canal project to a successful issue. The conditions are more favora ble at the present than they have been for years past for the successful accom plishment of the scheme. Oregon la specially Interested in securing the ca nal, and the mouth of the Columbia river is vitally interested in the pro ject We should see to it that our senators and representatives go to Washington this time pledged for the canal. The heroic efforts of Captain ardfton and h:r: rc-.v of the Columbine, to save life and property on their last trip to Destruction Island, has called forth many commendations from all who heard the story last evening. Cap- tain Richardson's work in rescuing onenot of charity, but of genuine helpful man from a schooner at sea, helping to brotherhood, no appeal to class hatred pull another schooner off the sands, and I wm ever And a lodgement In the hearts in towing the steamer Augusta into !0f the American people. tue river in tne tace or. me neavy east- erly gales prevailing during the last two days, was entirely voluntary and bespoke the skipper's kindness of heart and patriotism. Astorians cannot fall to be proud of their lighthouse tenders, and their skippers and crews. They have never been known to disregard a lignal of distress. A New York dispatch states that the embarrassments now are all upon the side of confidence, reviving prosperity covery has helped thousands of men and the belief that the black cloud in Just this condition. It makes which had overhung the country for! health, it makes pure, rich blood, it nearly a year has passed away. One forces out Impurities and kills germs, embarrassment relates to gold, says It doesn't make any difference what the New York correspondent of the name you call your trouble by dyspep Phlladelphla Press, not the scarcity of sia kidney disease rheumatism con- it but the plethora of It. He states that It Is coming forth in amazing ways and vast amounts. It is being brought from safe deposit vaults and placed upon deposit, while it is bting returned to savings banks by the holders of small amounts who withdrew It before election. An Instance Is noted of one savings bank, who."e depositors are mostly among the poorer people, receiv ing in one day $7,000 in gold, with indi vidual offerings In no case of more than .100 and In many cases of J10 or fc!0 gold pieces. What to do with the gold is the embarrassing question. The sub-trearury will not take It, because its receipts of gold by express are very large and there Is no legal requirement to exchange greenbacks for gold. It is expected that the clearing house will solve the difficulty by deciding that the banks shall receive the gold and store It for clearing houte purposes, issuing certificates upon lt with which balances may be paid. How completely this con dition of affairs disposes of the theory of the free silverltes that there Is not enough gold, and how conclusively lt demonstrates that the people prefar a paper currency based on gold to metal lic money. The experience of the past ten days has exploded every theory and assumption upon which the free silver cause rested. DUTIES STILL BEFORE US. The duty of the people did not end on election day, when they vlndlcateo the honor and the honesty of the na tion, says the New York Tribune. It is too much the habit of Americans to think that they can somehow discount all political obligations by voting on election day. To think this 1s, In fact, almost as bad as not to vote at all; for it helps to undo much of the good ac- onpllihed by voting. Today the hon est and patriotic rlttiens of the country are confronted with two grave duties. which are really two aspects of the same duty. These duties are, the en llghtcnmcnt of the hnnest-nilnded, well mtstnlng voters who have been carried a way by the financial and other rire- sles of the Chicago platform, and the promotion of a more kindly feeling; be tween the poor and the well-to-do, Poubilesa there were many men In the free ailver ranks who knew that the policy they were advocating was dishonest, and who advocated It be cause It was dishonest. They are i class by themselves and need not be dimusscO her,: but there are others, a great majority, we should like to be lieve, who were entangled by the spe cious sophistries of such toks as "Win's Financial School." These men came honestly to believe In what every b.nlv else knows to be dishonest and im moral. Pome of them have had no ed ucatlonal advantages: of others It may be mild that they have that "little leAmlnx" which Is "a dangerous thing but all of them are the easy prey of cvery sophist, mcumebank and deina- gogue that comes alone. Now these who have the honor and welfare of the country at heart ought to be as wijling to do something for these honest but misguided fellow-cltijtens as the polit ical schemers who have Just been de- j feated at the polls. The rise and grow th of free silver was no accident. It waj the result of the most skilful propa- gandism; and the thing which comes home to every good cltixen today Is that the only way to prevent such ma lefic movements in the future Is to ed ucate all citiaens above the point where they can be deceived. Then dema- goguts and charlatans like Tillman, and Altgeld, and tVbs. and Bryan would be absolutely harmless, because there would be nobody whom they could convert Closely connected with the duty of enlightening our misled fellow-cltliens is that of gaining their good will by cultivating a feeling of helpful sympa thy for them. It was said of a wealthy man who died some time ago that by his upright life and his kindness to his less fortunate felHiw-cltir.ins he had done more to postpone a social revolu tion than all the books against revolu tlon of the present generation. While there Is no such wide-spread hatred of the rich by the poor as Mr. Bryan said there was, there always has been, and will be for a long time to come, a cer tain number of people In the community who are on the lookout for an excuse to denounce the well-to-do. Some of them are lawless and vicious men, whose hostility to social order can al ways be taken for granted. Many oth ers have come honestly to believe that when a man becomes rich It Is somehow or other at their expense, and their la tent feeling of hostility to the rich is fanned Into fierce Bamea by every In stance of a rich man who makes an Improper use of his wealth or shows himself Indifferent to the condition of his less fortunate fellow-citizens. In this world, and especially In this land of ours, position and opportunity al ways Impose obligation. We say that the destiny of the republic rests upon the intelligence of Its citizens, and so It does; but It depends quite as much on the way In which its men of wealth use their wealth. If there should grow up in this country a class of rich men and women who should throw off all oh- : ligations of brotherhood and make their Plch-:Weuila Minister simply to coarse and 1 trutish nleasurns nnt:.li. n.H c the country from disintegration. But if, as we hope and believe, men of wealth shall show In the future, as they have shown in the past a spirit. A man's health is the rope by which he climbs to success. If he can keep bis health he will go on to success. Tet his health is the very thing he neglects more than anything else. It is easier to keep health than It is to regain It. When a man feels himself running down, when he realizes a loss of vi tality and energy, he must call a halt The strands of his rope are parting rap idly.
