The desperation of the Popoerat at the swelling of the tide In favor of Mo Klnley Is seen In the attempts to disturb or break up meetings- There have b.vn a number of instances of these reprehen sible practices all over the country, and they Increase in frequency. The free sllveritea have reached a point. In their "sign It. I did so, and thought no more "about It until the last two months, "when 1 And It Is bring circulated and "used fr political purpose. To pla cate these miners we have already pass ed two silver laws, under the operation of which we have paid the miners HtH,- OOO.rtOO for silver bullion that at last accounts was worth only fcllS.WO.OOO. 'continue at the expense of the poor as Another shameful thing Is the con- n-vi as th rich, all of whom would be stant springing of falsehoods to deceive ! forced to contribute to the benefit of the people. Not only are all sorts of false reports being circulated in rela tion to the labor vote, but reports about "coercion of employes by employers" are taking wings afresh, along with a new line of misrepresentation. The last report la continuation of the one cir culated some time ago that the McKln ley and Hobart management waa one of boodle and thing. Some time ao a bulletin was circulated from Popocratic headquar ters, and the same matter waa run through Its system of ready prints and newspaper plate matter, to the effect that the country as well as the metro politan newspapers were being tubsi diied or coerced by mortgagee In sup porting the Republican sound money ticket. Now comes a statement to the effect that "McKlnley money" is being used to purchase the sentiment of the agri cultural press of the country- It is as serted by the Bryan management that all or nearly all of thi agricultural newspapers of the country have been approached with propositions of money, and that all of the agricultural news papers of the sountry now supporting sound money or protective tariff have been hired to do so. An Instance cited Is that the management of the Ohle Farmer, of Cleveland, was approached Individually by Chairman Hanna and offered 110.000 to publish gold matter In its Issues until the date of election. This statement has been published by many free coinage papers, especially a number of the advocates of the election of Mr. Bryan In Ohio. A letter has just been addressed to Chairman Hanna, signed by Mr. M. U. Lawrence, president of the Ohio Far mer Publishing Company, saying: "You or your associates may have noticed that several Bryan papers In Michigan, Ohio and elsewhere have been publish ing reports and statements that you offered our paper 110.000 for reading matter space. I hardly know whether the tiling is worth the attention, but will state very plainly that you nor any one representing you have said a word to us on this subject, and you can au thorize your publication committee to make whatever use of this statement you choose over our signature. I have no means of knowing whence the state ment originated, but we have an edito rial this week positively denying it" President Lawrence then enclosed a carbon copy of a letter v. hlch h?s b?"n sent out to many Inquirers denying the statement in unmeasured terms. Is a cause worthy the support of hon est men which must depend on forgery, on fraud, on falsehood ? Is it an honest cause which depends upon the misli-ai-lng of the people? Can the silver tru.'t fool the people, as the fr;e traders fool ed them In 12? tho producers of bullion who have al ready made a great deal of money out of us. As the phosphorescent glow of Mr. Bryan's oratory continues to flicker around the land. It Is becoming more and more obvious that the Issue of free silver plays but a small part In the cam paign, and that the- only real danger to be apprehended from the efforts of the candidates consist In their tendency to make the poor bitterly hostile to the rich and begin a warfare of classes among the American people.
