Is located at the terminus of the Astoria and
Columbia River RsHrcsl. at the mouth of the
Columbia River.
It fronts on the deep water of the Colombia
River Harbor, and teinji perfectly protected from
wind and seas, affords the very best docks for
ships on this bay; therefore, it is the exact spot
for the seaport of the great Northwest.
These facts were recognized by the Astoria
& Colombia River Railroad Co. when
New Astoria Was Selected as
the Starting Point for their Railroad
and the Location for the Terminals.
New Astoria is platted upon a plane high
enough for perfect drainage, and well protected
by a high ridge behind it.
Its streets and avenues are wide. and. in
fact it is laid out on modern plans.
Extensive street improvements are now un
der way.

It Is reported that the hay crop In
Clatsop county will this season be a
very short one. In the month of June
there wn no rain whatever, an un
precedented fact in the history of this
county In a number of year. The
grass was burned before It ripened,
and It is probable that not enough
hay has been produced for home con
sumption.
Mr. W. J. Ingalls says that all of
the subscriptions to the Astoria and
Clatsop road are very much needed
Immediately, and that the committee
hopes that all friends of the mad
who have not paid up their subscrip
tions will send In the amount to Mr
W. E. Dement at once. Mr. lncalls
writes that If there are any who do
not Intend to pay the committee will
be compelled to take steps to protect
themselves.
It Is said that the fishermen operat
ing the traps at Chinook bench, and
who have been limited In their deliv
eries tn the canneries during the past
week, adopted the plan of taking out
only the number of fish to which they
were limited, leaving the rest In the
traps, which have Increased dally In
the number of fish caught. They thus
keep on hand a large Quantity of live
fish which can be used as soon as the
canneries can take them.
During the past few days w hile there
has been such a large surplus of fish
at the rannorles, a gentleman connect
ed .with one of them Is authority for
the statement that in his opinion a
large cold storage house In Astoria
woud be a paying investment. During
such times as these large stocks of
fresh fish might be carried on Ice for
a day or two until they could be pack
ed or otherwise disposed of Instead of
being wasted. He says that sooner or
later, with the Improved facilities of
transportation, which the city will
soon enjoy, the shipping of fresh salm
on, sturgeon and halibut from this
port will become an Important factor
In Its commerce. Here Is an opportu
nity for the Investment of capital In
a profitable enterprise.
