"We ara unalterably oppoaed to any acfceme that will gtva to this country a depreciated, or debased currency. We fa Tor the una of silver as currency, but to tha extent only and under such restric tions that 1U parity with gold can ba maintained. Wisconsin Republican con vention. WHT NOT TAKE UKRON? It has been intimated from various actions that It tha Democratic national convention, shall Do controlled by the trs silver freaks, aa now seem p st-lble. may nominate Cameron aa Its candi date for president, aa such a nomination would assur his acceptance) by the "Pop wltets and thus make A fusion between Democrats and Populists on the moat vital Issue of the contest Several prom- feieot Democrats, notably Senator Gor sun. In discussing the situation, declare It impossible for Cameron to be the omtnee of the Democratic national con vention. K the Democratic n.itlonal convention snail be controlled by the cheap money element, why should not Cameron be taken aa Its candidate? He la the strongest cheap money man In the coun try. He Is a Democrat by birth and long cherished conviction, and he has absolutely severed his relations with the Republican party. He ta the most prom inent? representative 3t the free sliver erase to be found In the country, and . Is one of the few who,' outside of his . cheap- sneney semi-demi-quavers, has ." shsneter, courage and sense. ... There Is but one absorbing Issue in the coming national contest, and that " st sound o- on sound money. On the ' auction, of the tariff It Is taken for granted that If the Republicans succeed they will bring about s return to the ' protective policy, and there can be no t Issue in the minds of the people about that- So the money Issue is the prominent- Issue before the people, and If the D"OJ.ra.llc national convention shall de generate Into a free silver conclave ther would be eminent fitness in nominuting Cameron for president. A free silver national convention would fee the last of the kind ever to be held fey the Democratic party as a national organisation, and If the Democracy shall choose to die without nope of resurrec tion by adopting the ?h;ap money erase, they could do no better than to die in the embrace of Cameron. He would give some measure of resictablllty to the funeral ceremony. If the Democrats of the nation mean ta be honest on the money question as taught by every one of the great apostles of Democracy, they could not entertain the question of nominating Cameron. Jefferson and Jackson, who are ever pointed to as the exemplars of Demo cratic conviction and action, were reso lute and tireless In their efforts against heap money, and If the Chicago con vention shall fall Into the hands of an organization that has a degrad-?d cur rency at one end and anar 'hints at the ether. It must be accepted as a departure from the fundamental principles of the Democratic faith and the end of Demo . era tic effort. The Democrats can well afford to be defeated In 1896 with an honest money platform and an honest .noney candi date. Even If they did not command s single electoral vote they would poll millions of votes and command the re spect of the country and of the world and be a hopeful party for the future; but If the cheap money freaks are to dominate tha convention It would add a shade of respectability to Democratic degeneracy by nominating Cameron for president, and he would command more electoral votes than any other man who could be nominated on the free silver platform. If Democracy Is to reuse to be Democracy, Cameron is the logical candidate for president. WHY WALT, STREET MARKETS HAVE BEEN STftONO. That the tide has turned and a :evlval of general business Is assured upon prin ciples which lie at the bottom of all suc cess cannot be denied. The pulse of national, boslness Is more keenly felt In Wall street than perhaps anywhere else , t lhe country, and In commenting on ' to sltua'tloh the New York Herald says: Altboueb the Wading spec.ibv.lve Indus t -lai Mork had a sharp fall In Wall street hr wetk the market for securities was M-t- li;;Jjtly effected. Ex- -j vacant lmKH have bene reduced fti exports have Increased, so that there lios been little need to send Bold out of the country, and the :ieaury's rpsor.ve remains at reassuring figures. A' (Trowing conviction that the next pident will be elected upon a sound money platform has contributed to the Improvement, and the speculative con tingent Is encouraged by the ispected sojournment of congress at an early y. Jnrope, however. Is not buying eur tCki'lti volume, and probably will not do ha wlle there remains any doubt ss to 3n; (essf ul termination of the Vcnczuferi negotiations. However, Investors who dislike to see v ... the current values of their holdings marked down even temporarily are as sured hy the reflection that 'he rtontlng mass of American shares and bonds In Kurorpe h dwindled to such small pro portions that ew-n another "war scare" would probably not jwrtlcWwte enough selling from that quarter to work serious mischief. For the present women will not be per mltted to serve as lay delegate in the Methodist Episcopal general conference, but the vote has been so close that It Is virtually a victory for them. The vole wss Isken by conferences and mission ftelds, and shows an overwhelming num ber In favor ;,&15 for and S.Mu ugalnat but as three-fourths are necessary to carry, the question was lost by the scant minority of 18. This snows that the tide has turned and sentiment Is rapidly growing In favor of this move ment to place woman on the level with man. The concession asked for had ! ready been decided In the lower bodies by more than the constitutional three fourths Time works wonders, it Is a little more than a quarter of a century ago that laymen In the Vnlted Slates were admitted to the higher body, and their appointment Is still by the pastor of a church to the lower conference, and by that In turn to the higher. Di rectly, the tx-ople have no voice In the matter. A few women were appointed Say delegates In 1SSS, the question of sex not being raised. The contention was that there was no constitutional pro hibition, but the general conference In terpreted the clause In another way. and the women were, perforce, obliged to wait for another opportunity. It has come and gone, but they are now so near the goal that there Is scarcely any doubll but their patience will be reward ed when next the teat is made. Having won their first great battle In the fight for commercial supremacy and the advancement of home Interests, the people at the mouth of the Columbia river can well congratulate themselves and for a few days lojk back upon the work accomplished. By unanimity of action and a hard, long pull all together. Astorlans have opened the way for the development of the great resources of the city and county, and the opening up of a traffic whose magnitude has perhaps only been dreamed of by a few enthu siasts. A few of the results to be at tained by the completion of the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad have been outlined In another column. The building of the railroad, however. Is but the first step towards the sccomp'Uhment of the great ends desired and which can be at tained. The hardest part of the work of building up a great .Ity and estab lishing the avenues of -ommerce Is yet to come. Only by persistent effort, the banishment of all petty Jealousies, the sinking out of sight of personal ends and motives, and the burying of all factional strifes can anything like success become possible. The greatest good for the greatest number must be the watchword of alL All Interests of every descrip tion in city and county must be msde to bend to the one great object. "Tou help me and Til help you." Is the prin ciple that will win. When foreigners see that Astoria Is a city with but rne Idea the Chicago Ides, of pushing Itself ahead under any and all circumstances they will soon want to plant their dollars here and lend a helping hand In the building of a port where millions are sure to be annually handled. DOMESTIC LEGISLATION. The opponents of woman suffrage often refer to legislation as If It dealt only with 'he vast schemes of war. commerce and finance. They talk as If no topic of less magnitude than "bimetallism," the "gold standard." "free trade" or protective tariff" were ever broached In assembly chambers. In truth, ques tions relating to finance, commerce and war engage hut a fractional part of the tlmt of our legislators, and high-bounding phrases should not be allowed to dis guise the meaning, to the home, of even these subjects. All legislatures spend much time In regulating tax rates and making laws relating to descent, guardians, marriage, divorce, wills, public schools, public II rarles, public amusements, benevolent institutions, reform schools, truants, criminal children, orphans, deserted and dependent Infants, Insane, feeble-minded and pauper women, minors, adulterated foods, city sanitation and public morals. Arc women less directly concerned than men In any of these subjects? A con tinually increasing number of women hold property, and, therefore, have oc casion to pay taxes and make wills. Half the pupils In the public schools are girls and many more than half the teachers are women. Girls as numerous ly as boys, women more numerously than men, patronize publlo libraries. In larger number than men, women serve the public as entertainers. The women who are actively engaged in studying the conditions of the pocr and unfortunate and In organizing systematic What Causes Pimples? Cogging of the pores or mouths of the sebaceous glands with sebum or oily matter. The ping of sebum In the centre of the pim ple Is called a blackhead, grub, or crtueilooe. Nature will not allow the clogging of the pores to continue long, hence. Inflammation, pain, sueJ-.tig snd redness; later pus or matter forms, breaks or is opened, the plug comes out, and the pore is once more free. There are thousands of these pores In the face alone, any one of which is liable to be come clogged by neglect or disease. What Cures Pimples? All legislation affecting childhood, all In stitutions for the criminal and poor, must Interest women as directly as men. Who. If not women, are roncerned In all legislation about food and sanitation? The vast amount of legislation on these subjects Is a confession by the govern ment that Its final cause is the home, and It reveals the extent to which legis lation lends Itself to securing public con ditions which will best conserve the In terests of private life. As on further result of this aspect of legislation, the function of women In the state Is becoming apparent. The lesson of centuries has not been lost urton women. Thev have teen taurht thct they are the guardians of home In terests If this be true. Is It not logical ly certain that In a state whoe object Is to serve and conserve the home that the guardians of the home nre the proper critics. Judges and directors of the state, at least in so far as the state deals with domestic questions? Women today are crippled In the performance of purely domestic duties by their exclusion from direct participation In legislation: crip pled exactly as miners, weavers, tra chinlsts, farmers, lumbermen and mer chants of the male- sex would be were these class disfranchised.
