Dr. Brown 8cors the Pre on the Wit
ness Stand.
San Francisco, March 5. Rev. C. O.
Brown was on the witness stand In his
own defense this afternoon befor the
Congregational council. He prefaced his
testimony by scoring the newspapers on
the ground that an ffort had been made
to prejudice the community against him.
He charged that the reporters at the
council had suppressed all testimony fa
foralde to him and had misquoted his
utterances to the council.
At the request of the moderator, a mo
tion wa adopted by the council request
ing the papers to trat Brown Impar
tially, Dr. Brown then began his testimony.
He stated that he was born In Michi
gan 47 years ago, and learned ths trade
of a blacksmith. He began to study
theology at Oberlln, Ohio, when 17, and a
year later married his present wife. For
violating the rule that students must not
marry, he was obliged to leave Oberlln
and ao went to Ollvt college, Michigan,
where he remained seven years. He told
of the trouble In his first psstoral charge
at Rochester, Mich., and read the yer
diet completely exonerating him of im
morality.
He first met Mis Overman after he had
been In Tacoma six months. His wife
had engaged her as a seamstress, on the
recommendation of prominent ladles. He
said his acquaintance with ber In Taco
ma was casual. He knew she was trying
to acquire an education, and that sh
worked by day and studied at night. He
slated he had never had any Improper
relations wan Mrs. Stockton.
