IN HIS OWN DEFENSE. Dr. Brown 8cors the Pre on the Wit ness Stand. San Francisco, March 5. Rev. C. O. Brown was on the witness stand In his own defense this afternoon befor the Congregational council. He prefaced his testimony by scoring the newspapers on the ground that an ffort had been made to prejudice the community against him. He charged that the reporters at the council had suppressed all testimony fa foralde to him and had misquoted his utterances to the council. At the request of the moderator, a mo tion wa adopted by the council request ing the papers to trat Brown Impar tially, Dr. Brown then began his testimony. He stated that he was born In Michi gan 47 years ago, and learned ths trade of a blacksmith. He began to study theology at Oberlln, Ohio, when 17, and a year later married his present wife. For violating the rule that students must not marry, he was obliged to leave Oberlln and ao went to Ollvt college, Michigan, where he remained seven years. He told of the trouble In his first psstoral charge at Rochester, Mich., and read the yer diet completely exonerating him of im morality. He first met Mis Overman after he had been In Tacoma six months. His wife had engaged her as a seamstress, on the recommendation of prominent ladles. He said his acquaintance with ber In Taco ma was casual. He knew she was trying to acquire an education, and that sh worked by day and studied at night.
