This morning tlhe Electric will take 25 tons of hay to Westport, and will then go to Skamokawa and tow a seining out. fit from there to Snag Island. The schooner Datltla, lumber .laden for OakJland, Cal., sailed out yesterday af' ternoon. Her cargo consisted of 255,000 feet of planking .and 50,000 shingles. Two musts will be brought down from Westport to this city this morning for the pilot schooner San Jose. The old masts were taloen out of her yesterday. For the first time In many months the Signal cleared for the north yestTdiiy without taking back a single Chinaman of those she brought over on lur Incom ing trip. The steamer Electric yesterday took a large donkey engine to the Clatsop Mill Oo. s logging camp at North Shore and went from there to Skamokiawa with two other donkey engines. The Louisa Vaughn, a tender for the dredej;r Ladd, was sent down from Port land yesterday by the Port of Portland commission. She was busily engaged ell day sounding outside where the Ladd is operating. News came to the city yesterday Tthtit Captain A. M. Simpson, owner of the steamer Cruiser, had sold her to Pug t Sound parities for $2,000. She will be over- hauled and taken up to the Sound at the end of the monitlh. A new smokestack for the cower house of the Astoria Street Railway Co. at Uppetftowm wad completed yesterday at the Astoria Iron works, t It is the larg est in the city, being 61 feet In height and 35 Inches In dlaraielter. The seines along the lower rlwsr re. port gradually Increasing returns, and from Pillar Rock down all locations ro doing better as the water reaches lower levels. SpenOiT's grounds delivered 1250 pounds yesterday, and that Is at present about the average of the seining outfits. The Beaver Hill coal brought ud by the Blandhaird is to all appearances bet ter In quality than any previous importa tion from Coos Bay. The Item published In .this piapar sev- eral weeks ago concerning the vetteran Captain Phil. Johnson's first experience with an Iron ship has gone the rounds of nearly every newspaper on the coast. Talking of the matter yesterday, the captain expressed himself tersely as fol lows: "There was the skipper he was a WtMiroan; there was his missus she was a Sootcbmam; there was me I was a New England Yankee; and there was the Ship Che was Iron. Altogether it was the funniust four in hand that ever come into this ere river, and don't you forget t." Mr. Johnson, who was deputized by Admiral Walker to outline the troves memts of the Columbine, said b.tfore the steamer left that she would proceed to Bitka and thence cruise down the coast to San Diego, allowing a thorough in spection of the aids to navigation. The. least important points will be overlooked, and others, such as Tillamook Rock, will be passed by 00 account of the difficulty or landing, the Inspection being only of general culture. In the opinion of the officers of mhe Algonquin the woman hod been in the employ of some hotel in Charleston, or had gone down there for that purpose, and, becoming homesick, had determined to get back home wCithoutt waiting to earn sufficient money to pay her passage. As the woman had red hair Mate Rich thinks she will prove to be his. mascot. STATE NEWS. Interesting Items Gathered From Ore gon's Leading Newspapers. J. S. Lowe hauls "wool from fifteen miles beyond Dayton to Pendleton in four horse teams, . and the freight is figured in at 60 cents per hundred. Sun day evening a lot of ten tons was drawn Into town by four four-horse teams and taken to the scouring mill. There were fifty-one sacks In all. It is an enterprise which partakes of the mature of opposi tion to the railroad companies. The team freighters claim they can haul at 50 cents per hundred, or $10 per ton and make wages at it. The distance from Pendleton to Dayton by rail Is eighty-five miles. The Lowe wool comes from be yond Dayton fifteen miles, or 100 miles to Pendleton. The outfit used is: Sixteen horses, eight wagons. Four men drive. About three days are consumed on the trip going. This gives (25 per team for about five days' time, since going and coming, five days are required. For each team and driver this allows $5 per day. Hop growers of Uklah valley are greatly concerned over the appearance of a worm which is devastating the fields. The pest is similar in appearance to the army worm, being about one inch long and an eighth of an inch in diameter. It was first discovered by Robert Clark, a hop raiser. The worm works altogether by night, cleaning off the leaves and every vestige of green from the vine. It also works systematically, destroying a row at a time. Parties claim to have found the finest coal property yet discovered in this coun ty. It is located up the middle fork of the Coqullle country and wMhln a few miles of the line of the railroad. The vein has been dressed down and shows a face of twelve feet of clean coal. There is con siderable excitement over the find in that part of the country. Coast Mall. The Grant s Pass Courier gives pub. Uclty to the report that .an old man named Ell Taylor found a 14-pound nug get on Powell's creek last week. Josephine county There is considerable excitement out there in consequence. though the report lacks confirmation In Grant's Pass yet. The lump would be worth $2,500. The sheep shearers -of Wallowa coun ty were out on a strike for several days last week. The owners offered 4 cents and the strikers demanded 5. The men finally concluded to accept the 4 cents and all are now at work. Salem people who are property owners in Astoria are this week holding their breath, in sympathy with residents of that city. WOMAN SUFFRAGE. - In a discussion of the theme of woman suffrage, at the closing exercises of St. Agnes school, Albany, N. Y., Bishop Doane said: "One gets sick and tired of the way In which the Ui'.k of woman's vocation fills the air, not merely in the wild vagaries of Its blatant assumption, but in the parade and push of Its claims for recog nition of what ts called Its rights. "I believe that God will yet save this state and nation from the aggravated miseries of an enlarged, unqualified suf frage, which In its universality of male voters Is our most threatening danger to day. But If we are to be visited with this other Infliction, aa a well-earned punish, ment for many national sins, then I be. lieve that when iwe have tasted Its bit terness, we shall be brought back, per haps, through anarchy and revolution, to a democracy which shall demand for Its existence government by men whom edu cation and actual Americanism of .final interest in the nation quality to govern.
