Nearly every prominent newspaper In the country has taken Its turn at demol Ishlng the arguments and exposing the untruths contained In the book in favor of free silver, called "Coin's Fnancial School." It has remained, however, for the Chicago Times-Herald to put the cli max of discredit and utter unreliability upon this miserable fraud and imposition, which It does In the following manner: Thousands of people In every part of the country honestly believe that the so called lectures of "Coin" actually took place at the Art Institute In Chicago, beginning May 7, 1894 (see page 4 of Coin's Financial School) and that certain well known public' men attended these lect ures, asked questions, made objections and were completely answered. Now, we wish to state definitely that no such lectures ever took place In Chicago, or la any other place. It is one of the games of the author intended to deceive trusting people. Honest people who haVe sup posed "Coin" was to be trusted; have a light to feel indignant at finding but they have been tricked. Since It Is an absolute He to say that the lectures ever took place, anyone can Judge how much credence Is to be given to other parts of the book. . The following letter shows how far and wide the error has gone: Captolo, Qa April 23, 1896. Mr. H. H. Kohlsaat. Dear Sir: I have lying on my desk before me a copy of Coin's Fi nancial School, the contents of which are claimed to be lectures given in Chicago. On page 85 it publishes some questions claimed to have been asked by you. The people here are arguing as to whether such was really true or not. If you did attend these lectures, and there really were, as Is claimed by the book, such lectures given in which the people were Interested, will you do me the kindness of so stating? Yours very truly, C. A. WOODS. For the benefit of Mr. Woods, or of any other inquirers, it may be wild for Mr. Kohlsaat that he never attended such lectures, for the very good reason that no such lectures were ever given. 'The whole Idea of the book Is an absolute fiction. The author of "Coin" not only took an unwarranted liberty in using the names of well known men like Mr. L. J. Oage, Mr. J. W. Scott, Professor Laughlln, and others, who are falsely represented as asking questions they never uttered, but he trespassed beyond the bounds of de cency. Without any regard for courtesy, or for the proper feelings of honorable ( men, he unfeelingly poked fun (pages : 6 and 11, at a supposed son of Mr. J. W. Scott. That Mr. Scott never had any son was no protection from the rude horse play of this writer. Is It any wonder that caught In such falsehoods and duplicity, "Coin's" book is being distrusted? A writer who Js consciously deceiving in these important respects cannot b trusted In other statements. FRETTY SALMON LABELS. The false label agitation, thanks to the efforts of some of the big trade papers, in the East, and we hope, to some small extent to our own constant endeavors In this direction, is gaining ground rapidly and from every quarter comes, In unmis takable terms, a series of strong protests against the further continuance of this detestable method of swindling the pub lic. There is one side of this question which has not yet been touched on to the extent its importance warrants, Indeed In our idea no phase of this bogus brand trouble presents so much cause for ex posure. We refer to the acts of those commission men whose rascality Is smarter than that of the general run of the evil doers In the trade, and whose superior smartness leads them to adopt neater methods than ordinarily obtain. These "big fry" know that In several centers the taste for handsome and at tractive coverings for canned salmon Is growing considerably, and by spending a little money on papers, varnish, and choice lithography, they manage to make very presentable labels with, which to enclose pink Alaska salmon and refuse picked up generally under the name of Columbia river spring fish. It is unfortunately true that a large number of people are credulous enough to be taken In by beautiful wrappers, and as ome Individuals In the commis sion business have lately sneerlngly re marked, "the old red and black labels are going out of fashion." This may or may not be so, but we know this, that many and many a canneryman on this river has built up his reputation on the strength of those "ugly old red and black labels,' which have for the most part stood for good, honest fish, and no bum bug. And although there are today many handsome wrappers In the market that enclose contents Just as honestly packed, hU.1 it Is the quality of the fish Itself V..3 wrapper that g'iM rwne the test when the Judgment of the whole nie grocer comes to decide what goods he wants. He most certainly does not desire a beautiful array of pretty pict ures In his warehouse if every sale he makts of them to a retailer loses him a customer. And wo again reiterate the statement that there Is only one method for the pri vate consumer, the retailer and ' the wholesaler to adopt: Never buy a can of uulmon that does not bear on its face tc name of a packer whose reputation to.- honest dealing Is known; never at tempt to buy a pretty lubel with the idea taut the salmon must necessarily be as good as the picture. Look jit the name, That Is your only security against these paracltes of the commercial world, and that Is the only method by which you can avoid being swindled. V.-.3 skin of a wildcat is often remarka bly pretty, but we cannot remember hav Ins heard that his meat is fit for any thing besides feeding to game cocks and buzzards. THE GHOST OF A CHANCE. Is a very shadowy aflalr. Ere the chance of recovery becomes a vanishing ghost, take a more potent means of overcoming the inactivity of the organs tnai termi nates too frequently In fatal disease, by resorting to Hostetter s Btomacn mi tra which rives lust the requisite im pulse to the renal organs to promote their vigorous action without exciting them, an effect too often produced by the fiery and unmedlcated stimulants of commerce. Urlirht's disease, diabetes and Inactivity of the bladder, are foes of terrible men ace to the system. The inroads may, however, be stayed if they are met at the start and combatted wltn tne outers. This fine and Kenlal corrective also reme dies malaria. dyBoepsla, rheumatism, de bility, nervousness, and the Infirmities Incident to aire.
