A Conversation About Salmon Breed ing-Mr. Hume Defended. (Oregonlan.) Salem, March 23. (To the Editor.) Commenting In tihe presence of two others on- your mention of Mr. Hume's operations In salmon (breeding1 on the Rogue River, one of my friends, who travels aiboult Oregon consdlerajble Just for hia own pleasure, and has more than 'owe ibeen at Mr. Hume's cannery. remarked tfcat he noted complaints of Mr. Hume In the columns of the Ore gonlan, which he could not ascnfbe to any other cause than envy of the man's success. "For," he safd, "I am very sure Mr. Hume has done more to de velop 'the resources of that region than any dozen other men there." My oth er friend remarked: "Yes, and the good 'he lhas done, so far as the salmi on Interests of the Rogue river Is con cerned, lis not enjoyed by himself or local to 'his cannery. Salmon fishing was not a sport at Grant's Pass pre vtous to Hume's beginning his hatch ery." From this we pass to .the prdbahle value ot the state making the most of our Salmon Btreaims by systematlo artificial propagation and protection. Upon which ,the writer remarked that he had full faJth in the possibility ot stocking all the salmon streams of Or egon with the best variety that enters the Columbia river-conceded to he the Chinook. The last friends quoted remarked he "thought there must 'be a natural law of adaptation that intervenes or the Chinook would get Into the smaller coast streams of themselves." To this I replied that natural law unasslBted produced an apiple native ito Oregon smaller than an average grape, and no pears, plums, or grapes north of Dhe Umpqua valley. The native cherry is small and Wtter, but with thoss fruits of outside introduced we could challenge the world for size and qual ity. The same being true as to domes. tic animals, I believe It will be proved as true with reference to salmon as to the sheep and cattle that graze In our 1-iastures. I further commented on the praiseworthy effort Mr. MviGuIre to makina to start the propaigatlon of salmon, which Ibrought out another re. mark which I here repeat as a sug gestion. For many years I had had In my mind tho possibility the feaalbll. ity, If you please of a salmdn hatch pry conducted on the fleck of a large scow or ibarge, moored close up to the falls of the Willamette at Oregon Olty upon the tight upper deck of which ' a system of breeding troughs could be arrange,! supplied with water from the falls, and which could also be furnish ed with a erane and large dlpnet t lift the ibreedllng fish from the rive and kept for use in "live" boxes. The mode of catching salmon at those falls was an Idea 'that come to me BO years ago when watching Uhe Indians there, taking 'the splendid fish with a dlpnet la a hoop not more than three feet in diameter fastened on the end of a slim pole 20 to 25 feet long, the In, dlan, standing on the end of a plank Hive a spring (board, and playing his net by pushing the hoop Into the wa. ter, as far up stream and as deep as he cou'.d reaoh, and fetching It down siream with a sweeping motion. It was a fine sight to see a finely formed Indian, naked to the waist, and with ba.re feet, fetch a large, struggling salmon up to the end of that almost aivay3 wet and slippery plank, and i.areful'y carry it to the rode, on which generally some of his womankind were .. ailing to receive it, and either take Vs. to the embryo city for sale for 25 cents of barter, or to prepare for use or to cure by sun-drying. No such quanti ty of salmon reach the falls at Oregon City now as did then; but yet tt seems 10 me for a hatchery located there In some su.h manner as I have Indicated abundance of seed fish could be taken not only to hatch large numbers there, 'jut to send the ripe spawn by rail to the headwaters of the Biletz, Sluslaw, Elk, Umpqua, and Rogue rivers. I do not beileve the essential requirements of salmon breeding are limited to any particular locality or river like tht Clackamas. The whole fubj&ot is yet largely in Its experimental stage. What United States Fish Commissioner Mc Donald has learned or can learn, other men and women even may and can learn, and the present and future in habitants of Oregon have very great Interests In preserving and increasing the resources of our salmon fisheries. At this stage of the talk Mr. Hume' friend broke In with, "Well if Mr Hume just got a hint of the beliefs you are declaring, Ihe would be one of the first men In Oregon to make trial of them; he 1s jint that kind of a man." Then I replied, "I hope his days will 4 long In the land and hia ktnd multiplied." If he so desires to try the Chinook, I should think he could procure the seed fish by "live" boxes sfnt from the Chinook spit itself by sea, and I sincerely hope he may.
