The Astorlan guarantees to Its sub scribers the largest circulation of any newspaper published on the Columbia !;.k,M!SJ3!D Advertising rates can be had on ap plication to the business manager. The Weekly Astorlan, the third old est weekly in the state of Oregon, has, next to the Portland Oregonlan, the la rffa.f uraalrlu filrnnTnHnn In V .tn Handley & Haas are our Portland agents and copies of the Astorlan can be had every morning at their stand on First street The dty county still falls to take any Steps to require the owners of the va rious 'halls now used for public enter talmnemits to provide adequate means of egress in case of Are. Night after night the puMlo of Astoria are crowding these improvised and most dangerous places to the very doors, and yet the city authorities seem utterly indifferent as to the possible consequences. It would be a comparatively easy and very cheap process to convert Fisher's Hall now one of the least safe build lngs In the city into a reasonably safe place, and In view of the almost certain Increased demand which would be thereby created for it, why the proprie tor does not see It to his advantage to make the improvement Is a matte:, of much wonder. The promoters of some of the entertainments of the past season might be surprised If they know bow large a number of our citizens had been deterred from patronizing qr visiting these places by the fearful risks wihldh would be encountered in case of fire. The appointment of Dr. J. A. Fulton as health officer Is, of course, a great satisfaction to the friends of that gen. tleman, and a humiliating disappoint ment to those who gave their support to the other candidate. In view of the well-known division in the ranks of the party respecting this particular ap pointment, owing to the prominent re lation sustained to the respective local faotiona by the two candidates applying for K, It was doubted by many inde pendent Republicans If the governor would commit himself by recognizing either, and that the office would .go to some good Republican pihyslclan of the city (or Whom there are several) who had not been named in connection with It. It seems, however, that the governor Ihas hod no suoh scruples, and as Dr. Fulton Is a well-qualified phy sician for the office, and It was Gover nor Lord's right to select whom he pleased for the position, It looks as If the turned down candidate and his friends will simply have to make the beat they can of the matter. The fact that England will partici pate at all In a monetary conference will be regarded as encouraging by the advocates of an International agree ment regarding silver, because It ren ders more probable the holding of such a conference. It is questionable wheth er the German government would take the Initiative in asking the nations to enter upon another discussion of sliver without assurance that England would be represented, but having the assur ance It is to be erpeoted that Germany will now take prompt action for con vening; an international monetary con gress. France Is ready, to respond tc an Invitation, as are other European countries Interested in the question Thus there Is most favorable promise of having Vhds subject, the commanding Importance of which was never more fully realised than now, again pre sented to serious and earnest considera tion, with perhaps a mors general de sire to find a solution of the perplexing probQent than ever before. The declara tion as to what the attitude of the British representatives will be, in case a conference Is held, need not discour age the hope of something being accom plished for the larger use of silver In the world's currency. It Is not to be expectod that any radical change can be brought about at this time or tr he near future In the monetary system of any country which would participate in he proposed congress, but action fot tha lr.crc-ci w lvr ts possible without this, and. the chances of attain ing it certainfly seem brighter now than at the time of the last International conference. k NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATION.
